gear oil check 96jetta 2.0 GL

i have the manual it tells me to put it on stands but i dont know how high it has to be or how to check the oil and dont know which bolt it is i just want to know how the right way to check it is can someone please explain to me the right way to to check my gear oil i need to know because i think im low and i dont know how to check

Close to level is best. The fill/level plug is in the drivers side end.
