resonator questions

i have a 98 grand prix gtp (3.8). theres some holes developing in my resonator and its making my exhaust sound like crap. i read on another message that they deleted the resonator. what effects would this have on both the emissions, exhaust, and power? a new resonator would run me about 100 bucks but a new pipe would run me about 10 and i dont really see a purpose for the resonator. i was told that the resonator is just so that the sparks die out but i dont know if thats true. what is the purpose of a resonator and what will the effects be if i just do a straight pipe?

Re: resonator questions

the only ill effect of eliminating the resonator, is the car will be slightly louder than it was stock. The reduction in back pressure may cause a re-learn to be necessary, but other than that, it shouldn't cause any problems.

but, when you say it will be slightly louder but if i have holes in my resonator already, will it be quieter than that? a reduction in back pressure is a good thing right? and, a re-learn, what exactly is the process of that (sorry im not familiar with that term). and, will i get a boost in power or fuel milage or anything? thanks.

I never heard of having a re-learn* done due to exhaust changes. I was thinking of removing my resonatortoo, but because I bought Superturbo mufflers, and they are not lound enough.

If removed, does that "re-learn" acually have to be done?

Re: resonator questions

it will be quieter than it is now, just not as quiet as it was new. As far as the re-learn, anything that affects fuel delivery or exhaust back pressure may require one. I doubt just removing the resonator would cause a need to do so, but I'd rather err on the side of caution and let you know it's possible that a re-learn may be necessary.

I wouldnt worry about a relearn. I have never heard of that. Only a case relearn when you get an intense PCM or DHP, but thats a whole fifferent story. If your going for performance you want to get rid of the resonator and the U-bend (04-05s dont have a ubend). Those are 2 of the bad restrictions on our cars after the down pipe. You will notice a slight difference in power up top but nothing drastic. In order to do the 3.4 pulley (stock is 3.8) on your super charger you MUST open your exhaust up to say the least. Knock retard is bad. but thats only if your blown
