93 engine problem

I just bought a 93 grand cherokee that was hesitatiog, The plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor were all replaced. It hesitates and sputters when going down the road, The check engine light isn't on but, I tried pulling the codes any way, I get #12- battery is disconected... I have no idea how this is possible but, I charged it up and she still gets that code. any ideas on the sputtering? I was thinking tps, map, or the O2 sensor...

Re: 93 engine problem

The 12 code is to tell that the battery power has been interupted in the last 50-100 key on cycles.

For the hesitation/sputter, start with some fuel injector cleaner - could be an injector or maybe even the fuel pump or filter.

The cam position sensor would be the first ignition component that I would check after the parts you've replaced though the TPS would be up there too..

Not a comprehensive list - just a place to start.

There is a kind of a manual here for a 93 xj: http://www.lunghd.com/Downloads_and_Links/Downloads.htm

Re: 93 engine problem

update... It isn't the tps, map, or the o2 sensor, the 02 sensor is new, the tps, and map sensor I swapped with my 94 cherokee, no change still hesitates/sputters... I was told by the dealer that is dosn't have a cam sensor just a thing in the dist that spins, I forget the name of it... it has fuel pressure but, I don;t know how much since I don't have a gauge. The computer is working fine, tried the one from my 94 w/o change... what next?

Re: 93 engine problem

To check the fuel pressure, you'll need a gauge and a manual for finding the specs and test locations and procedures.

There is a build a gauge how to at this link
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/quickfpg.html

or you can buy one like this KD 3386 from an automotive store http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi02.html#3386.
