steering wheel shimmy

I have an ongoing and frustrating problem. I experience a wheel shimmy at about 60 speed onwards. I have had a balance, alignment and 4 new tyres, the steering rack boot replaced and the rear disk brakes scraped but to no avail, any advice as to the possible cause would be great. The tyre guy said the rear wheels were worn on the inside if this triggers anything.....

What year is your Prelude?

How many miles on it?

Likelyhood of issue in order of typicalness:

1) Wheel balance (wheel weights can fall off)
2) Bent wheel (rim)
3) Defective Tire (Especially if NEW and just mounted)
4) Front wheel bearings (80-100k miles plus)
5) Shock tower bearing assembly at the top (not common)

The year is 94, 150ks. I have had numbers 1 & 2 checked but not the last two, there is no strange noises from the front which usualy means the front wheel bearings, just the steering wheel vibrates.

I think the mechanics around here are flabergasted as to what could be the problem!

The cv joint on my 92 s would vibrate while accelerating above 50mph. Replace both of'em.

That's certainly a good point... I didn't consider the CV joints...

They are cheap enough to swap out... 75 dollar rebuilt.

It could be the cv joints because evrytime I turn right there is a light knocking noise (very slight) every time I turn right into corners, but not on the left when turning, very strange. Did your car make that sort of a sound?

Well, I found that it was the front wheel bearing that was causing that symptom for me.

Honestly, it could be either of them.

I did notice that if you brake REALLY hard you'd feel a pulsing in the brake pedal. Also if you look at the outter edge of the brake rotor, you may be able to see a 1/4 inch area that looks like it was rubbing the caliper holder. If you see that, then it's your front wheel bearings without a doubt.

when you experince the shimmy at or over 60 mph let off of the gas if the shimmy stops its your cv axel go up to about 70 and let off gas if it stops then starts back as soon as you apply gas its your cv axel.
