My 98 Camry just stalled on a street corner, can't get it to run.
I've been reading this forum for quite some time before actually registering and found it extremely useful at numerous times so now I'm asking.
98 Camry CE, 4cyl, I have some electrical addons, like remote doors, and remote start and all that, just so it can give more info. Check engine light was on for a while, code 446 EVAP problem, safe to drive as told by local garage. 247 000 kilometers, bought it at 244k, judging by the pile of invoices from garages, it seemed to be a good deal for the price I paid it. It has been running A1 until now. Started the car, went down the street, stopped at an intersection, turned left, pushed the gas to advance, car started stumbling and died right there. Pushed it back in the driveway. Now : The car cranks and ignites, then stumbles and dies. If you give it some gas, it stumbles for a slightly longer period of time (4-5 seconds), then dies. Checked fuel pump, seems okay, compression is okay, there was no liquid of any sort under the car, haven't noticed electrical failures in the accessories. The battery is quite old but was apparently not causing problems. I read the non-starting 94 Camry guide and tried some of it that I thought could apply to my 98 Model, but nothing worked. I think the guy that checked on it told me that by bypassing the alternator he could have it running faintly, but not for long. I think my computer might be screwed up somehow or some electronic device is malfunctionning because we did not find any major mechanical failures. Please help me if you have anything because I don't feel like watching a mechanic try a slew of uncertain things that don't work while I still pay for them all along. |

Re: My 98 Camry just stalled on a street corner, can't get it to run.
List of thing I would check from least costly to most costly.
1. inspect spark plug condition 2. measure spark plug wire resistence 3. verify the plug is "sparking" against ground 4. pull out the alternator and take to autozone to verify that it is working properly. 5. Bring the battery for them to check too. They do all this for free. It only cost you time to remove them from your car. Of course, after this, you will be checking for fuel system, such as fuel pump, filter, injector... ASM |

Car's working fine now.
Apparently one of the coils blew up and ripped the adjacent module apart, so I had to change both. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. |
