Security issue on '89 T/A...

I have an 1989 Trans-Am that occasionally will not start. It is not the battery and the starter is good as well. My guess is something in the security circuit. Sometimes it works fine, other times it wont crank. The security light comes on and goes off after a few seconds like it should when I first turn the key to the on position, but it does this no start thing randomly regardless of whether the light came on and went out again. Any thoughts? Could it be the key or is more than likely the security system itself? By the way, the key is the one with the resistor chip in it...so I dont think they can wear out or anything but Im not sure. Thanks.

Sounds like your VATS system. That is the security device on your car. If the system doesn't recognize your chiip, it will not turn over and cuts fuel to the motor. I priced on for my 89 a few months ago and it was about 200 or so.

It's a seperate unit thats connected to the ecm via wiring. It's located inside firewall in the dash on the drivers side. If you send me an email I might have a complete set of 89 Firebird wiring diagrams. The part in question I believe is called a pass key decoder module.

No, thank you though. I have a wiring diagram it just doesnt show exactly where the "pass key module" is located. You answered that for me. Much appreciated.
