Buying a programmer on Ebay

Sure they have low prices, but can I even use it on my truck? On Powertech's website, under the FAQ's, they say the programmer is "married" to the first vehicle. How's all this work?

I bought my hypertech ppIII on ebay used. As long as the previous owner deprograms it, you should be fine. If they do not deprogram their vehicle it will be tied to their vin#.

This is only true with hypertech. Superchips, you have to send back to the shop, which costs about $200. So you might as well buy new. Powertech, I'm not sure of, but if their FAQ page says "No", I wouldn't risk it.

If you decide to go the new route, check out www.nelsonperformance.com first. If you go with used, I recommend Hypertech PPIII. You have GOT to be sure that they reset the programer back to stock. If not you'll have an expensive and ugly paperweight.

Yup..with Powertech, if the previous vehicle is "deprogramed" or returned to factory programing spec's, you should be able to use it. You just can't use it on more than one vehicle at a time!!

Re: Buying a programmer on Ebay

So how do I actually get a Nelson programmer. Do Ijust call him up and tell him what I'm looking for and he'll hook me up? Also, what's the price range?

Nelson Performance tunes a pcm, sends it out to you, you remove your old one, install the new one, send the old one back to them. You call and tell them what you want, and Allen will probably ask you a series of questions to best determine what is right for you. Price range is probably gonna be around $400
