ZoneAlarm on XP

I seem to have a bit of a problem with ZA. It seems to take longer than it should to load when the PC is started. Also when i shut the PC down, a message box appears notifying me that ZA is not responding and gives me the option to end the program there. I have no trouble with normal running. Any ideas??

1. Make sure the version you downloaded is approved for XP.

2. Make sure that you don't have any other firewalls installed. Also make sure that XP's firewall is disabled.

Definately got the XP ver, but not sure about the XP firewall business. I shall have a look.

Thanks for your help, RB.

[Edit] How do you disable the XP firewall?? [/Edit]

Ah, disabled the firewall, and no difference. still get the message box when shutting down!!! do i need to alter any other internet settings and just let ZA do the work???

This is where I go to talk about computer stuff. I assure you that they can help you clear up the problem. Normally I would be able to help but I just don't use soft firewalls, so I don't know too much about them.

Tech IMO.

It is a great forum.

I have a firewall built into my router, for when my laptop is connected at home

For at work and school I run the Firewall in WinXP Pro.

Its secure enough for me. My data is backed up daily to my SparcStation (not connected to internet) , so if something did happen, I lose at most a days work.

Definitely get a router. It's as safe or safer than running a software firewall. Not only that, you can share the internet connection because most of them have a built in switch (usually 4 port). I couldn't imagine not having one. I take laptops home from work and I plug them into the router and I"m on the net.

hey bro

try using blackice, it's supposedly the best firewall you can buy according to some guys i know that work for the DOD here. This is what we use here (I'm a DBA) in addition to physical firewalls, it's a little advanced, but easy to get off kazaa and u can get serials from the net thru google or u can even use serials 2001 which i would recommend to everyone. and as far as physical firewalls go, u can never lose w/linksys products.

Zone alarm is a good firewall but has a lot of issues like blocking forever internet access if you disable it and other things. I agree with itsmeek get BlackIce it is the most mature firewall out there (i mean in the sofware retail category). I strongly disagree with him about the quality of linksys products.

I second that Neutrino, I will fight against Linksys until the day I die or they improve their product to industry standards and change their business practices. If you are going to buy networking products look for Cisco, Intel/Xircom, 3com, Netgear, Siemens, and there are a lot more, but avoid D-Link and Linksys like the plague.

As for what firewall to get, get a hardware firewall, nothing better, though I might get a soft firewall to monitor traffic.
