Engine stalls w low rpm idle 2000m

My wife said that it started to stall and had to drive with 2 feet to keep it running. It has 90k on it and probably needs tuned up (I will be changing plugs, wires & fuel filter this week) but it started suddenly. Of course every time I drive it it's OK and doesn't have a problem. It was running fine till this happened. Any ideas?

Sounds like the ISC mtr is failing! Have you noticed a tendency for stalling immediatly after initial startup or rpm spikeing after near stalls?

It does tend to be more of a problem on cold start but does it warm as well. She said that it doesn't spike that she can tell because she revs it up to keep it running.

Re: Engine stalls w low rpm idle 2000m

ISC symptoms can occur with a hot or cold engine, and RPM spikes generally occur because the PCM sets the pulse widthe at a high rate to counter a sticking or unresponsive ISC thats not opening fast enough to prevent stalling after starting. But opening the throttle will mask this till it opens. What I'de would suggest is removeing the ISC mtr to check for deposits built up on the poppet mechanism (build up can increase the inertia of the valve and decrease responsiveness to rate change and opening times!) Also push the poppet into the opening between ports. If it sticks in that position or resists movement back to neutral position it needs replaceing. If there's deposits, but it moves freely try cleaning them out, and see if your concern clears up. In some cases even cleaning won't help a "lazy" high mileage ISC mtr! (If your not sure what the ISC looks like, it's the cylindrical shaped silver "gizmo" on the intake. On a 4.0 OHV its behind the throttle body, and on the 4.0 Sohc its under the top engine cover.) GOOD LUCK!

Hey, asemstr! Thanks, it solved the problem! I waited for several days before replying because I wanted to be sure it really fixed it. There were some deposits that I cleaned out and now everything is good.

Re: Engine stalls w low rpm idle 2000m

Is there going to be a problem with me using WD-40 to lube it up.. It was initially stuck.. and I unstuck it and was able to idle the explorer, but I noticed it wouldn't last long.. so I sprayed it with WD-40.. is this going to cause any damage? It's moving freely now, but haven't installed it yet.. please let me know...thanks
