Clutch Or Tranny Bad?
My Son Has A 1990 K1500 6cyl Pu 4x4 With A Manual Tranny. I Can Put It In 1st,2nd,3rd And 4th Without Using The Clutch (gears Don't Grind) And It Goes In Gear Just Like Your Using The Clutch, But Going To Reverse They Grind And I Have To Put In The Clutch. Under Any Situation Though, It Won't Move. This Just Happened All-of-a-sudden (if That's A Phrase!). What's The Problem? Please Respond If You Can. He's Under A Major Time Constraint To Get It Moved & Fixed. Anything We Can Do Or Is It A Tranny Shop Job?
Thanks |

Re: Clutch Or Tranny Bad?
Thanks For The Input. That Seems To Be The General Consensus From People I Talk To But It Mistifies Everyone How Reverse Acts Differently.

Re: Clutch Or Tranny Bad?
Fwd gears are constant mess and use syncros. Reverse is a straight cut gear (not constant mesh).

Thanks for the explaination although a bit is still lost on my limited understanding! Are you saying this is intirely logical that the clutch would act that way? Also, do you think it's a result of, shall I say, BEATING the vehicale or is this normal wear & tear? It just came out of the blue. He did say that he smelled a burning rubber smell the day before. Thank you SO MUCH for the input! |

Yes the way you are explaining things it all points to the clutch being bad. This could be a direct result of beating on the truck I.E. hard hole shots of tring to pull something to large for the truck. My guess would be he tried to pull something that was to heavy for the truck to pull. But it could also be a mechanical the pressure plate could have broken a spring or the slave cylinder could have stuck. So you realy need to pull it down to see what happened. He said he smelled burning rubber ask him what he was doing right before he started to smell the burning rubber. |

What And Where Is A Slave Cylinder?

If the pressure plate does not completely release from the clutch (i.e it is broken), the input shaft is still turning a little bit making it real hard to get it into reverse (because of the straight cut gears). A bad slave cylinder, bad master cylinder or mis-adjusted clutch can also cause the same thing to happen. //2000CAYukon |
