Andy Mathews is a well known F1 modeler.I knew a guy that got one of his models for around 4000 dollars!

Andy Matthews produces some amazing 1:12 F1 cars (I saw his Lotus 49 a few years ago, and it was amazing). He's started to produce books showing detailed photographs of the real cars and his models to help fellow builders.

Also worth looking for is Akihiro Kamimura who works under the banner of God Dwells in Small Things. He's a Japanese builder of mostly highly detailed 1:43 models, and has been an inspiration to me for a while. If you google his name you'll find quite a lot of stuff, but my current favourite is his awesome take on Tamiya's 1:20 Ferrari F2001. The text is all in Japanese (how about a translation someone!) and you can find a complete build diary of it here. For anyone working on a Tamiya F1 car, this will blow you away!

Re: The very best models.. Check this out..

Andy's work is astonishing, that is a given. But I am surprised he always sticks to Tamiya 1/12th kits. He makes a point of saying how little of the basic kit is actually used, but if that is the case why doesn't he build more unique subjects from scratch? Or if he is up for an even bigger challenge, a Protar!

Adds a whole new level to that well used expression "it looks like a 1:1"

I guess he likes to build the Tamiya 1:12 scale kits. Sometimes it is hard to quit what you like..

That's OK, but Tamiya Hardly produce any 1:12 F1 kits anymore.. They do a few re-releases that I've seen this year, Honda Mp4/6 and the 190 Ferrari. I can also buy the Williams FW14B but they don't seem to be making anymore 1:12 kits.. Kinda makes his passion shorter, as this kits must be getting harder and harder to obtain..

No disagreement though, the guy has skill. I wouldn't pay $4000 for a plastic scale kit..!! I would pay £300 for the kit and detail up sets to build my own, as I enjoy the building, but once they are done, it just lays in the display cabinet doing nothing.. $4000 is too much for me, however the hardcore F1 nut, with a lot of money - I can see why they would pay it..

I see there was a Honda Mp4/6 for $1400 on ebay just a few days ago. He has been attempting to sell it now for a fair few weeks.. Anyone with this type of money really want it, but the fact it's taking a long time to sell just shows not everyone or anyone can afford or are willing to pay that sort of money..!!

Talking of which, on ebay at the moment, well UK ebay there is a whole lot of Tamiya 1:12 F1 kits for sale.. Are Tamiya getting ready for another batch of 1:12 re-releaeses.. Notice the Honda F-1RA.. Seen three in the past few days.. For 7 months didn't see one..

Although Andy is indeed one of the best out there, I must add Bil Attridge to the equation
I bought my first F1 model because I found his website and I awed at his work. Bil's website

Those pictures in Andy's page were taken by a professional photographer with a 22MP digital camera. Quite amazing, no? One thing that I keep asking myself is how do they keep their models so dust-free and so absolutely clean?.....Simply astonishing!

Although, yes, the quality is gobsmacking... you can recreate those shots yourself to a degree if you're any good with photoshop. Not boasting or nowt but I've been a graphic designer for the last 12 years and could probably work something similar from an outdoor shot.

But, not to take anything away from the guy - I don't think any words can describe how good his work is!

The web forum I got the link from said just that, and I think the pictures have been docked in some way. There is no dust, or marks nothing... Now, yes this is very good work, but supermodel pictures are photoshopped in some way.. Airbrushed skin anyone..??? Then touched up with the old computer photo software..??

Good work, but I think the dust etc might have been touched out with a pro photo team, I mean it has been mentioned that the photos were taken with some very high end kit..!!

Still, much better then what I can do. by miles..!!
