Rattling Noise coming from engine

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 96 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 and I have been having rattling noise for about 2 years now in the engine. The noise is coming in the direction of the pullies. My mechanic is clueless and I want to get rid of the rattling thanks. P.S. please explain slowly because I am not that mechanically inclined.

the 2.2 is know to get valve train noise.

Check your mount bolts to your power steering.

While the engine is running look to see if any pulleys are wobling or crooked. It could be a bearing in your auto tensioner they go bad all the time. Poor design, and a pain to change.

I was reading quite a few threads, and some people say to check the timing chain belt, if that is a little loose it will give you that rattling noise. What about the rocker arms? Do you think one of those could be the culprit?

I had a 90 cav and the valve train rattled all the time. Bugged the hell out of me. it wasn't the pushrods but the rockers and the tube the rockers are on. Take your valve cover off and see if it is louder.

Does it stop when you turn on the A/C? If so, check the A/C clutch as well....it jingles and jangles and sounds like a loose pulley.

Re: Rattling Noise coming from engine

It doesn't stop when I put on the ac, the sound has been there forever though, just can't seem to resolve it. Thanks superslow I will take off the valve cover and check to see if its the rocker and the tubes. This will be my weekend project.
