1987 fx16

I recently purchased 1987 corolla fx16 hatchback. Car looks great and
runs good. One issue that does not sit well with me is the sluggish
start it has when I start out in drive. Once the car gets going it shifts
smoothly and runs great. The overdrive works well and the car is a
pleasure to drive with the exception of starting out. Does anyone know
what is causing this or is this normal?
