sticking starter??

I have an 86 GT that has a strange problem. I started it up and it was making a funny noise. I turned off the ignition and when I opened the hood the belts were still turning slowly and it sounded like it was trying to start... I figured it was the starter, so I changed the starter and the starter relay. It cranked up fine the first time, but when I shut it off and tried it again I ran into the same problem. The starter that I put in was a remanufactured one from Autozone, so I don't think that it could be the problem... Another thing is that everytime I disconnect the battery, which is the only way to make it stop trying to crank, the relay gets shorted out time the terminal gets disconnected. Any suggestions? Hopefully somebody can help out.

Thanks

Jimmy

Re: sticking starter??

i just ran into that problem not to long ago with my 87 gt. i changed everything the starter, starter solenoid, and the ignition switch and no luck. it turned out to be a bad chassis ground. i cleaned the grounds at the AC compressor and the ones to the inner fender area. and i also added a 10 gauge ground wire from the solenoid to the sway bar bracket. hopefully this helps alittle.

Re: Re: Re: sticking starter??

Where did you attach the ground wire at on the relay? I've got the positive battery terminal, the other wire that goes to the starter and a small red wire, i'm guessing that's the fusable link? Did you put the ground on the fourth small stud that isn't used?

Re: sticking starter??

i ran the ground wire from one of the bolts that attaches the relay to the inner fender to the sway bar bolt. the small red wire that goes to the relay is the 12 volt source from your ignition switch. the fourth small stud doesn't get used. hope this makes any sense.

Re: sticking starter??

that makes sense. I just replaced the solenoid again, this time I grounded it to the chasisis. It worked the first time, but I'm gonna wait an hour or so and see what happens. Thanks for the advice you were a big help!
