4g63T turbo engine

I recently had my improperly installed oil filter come off my car
while I was on the highway. All my oil leaked out within a minute
and before i could get over and stop the car.
As a result the engine Seized and is now gone forever (may it RIP)
What I need is a new mitsubishi turbo engine for my 97 talon tsi awd
any recommendations on where to get a good one and what price range
I should be looking at?
Thanks alot!

If you are going to just replace the entire thing, I suggest doing the 6 bolt swap. The 6 bolt engines were in the 1g turbo cars, and are much stronger internally and are less prone to crankwalk. Do a search, it has been discussed many times. After you decide how much better the 6 bolt would be, search yahoo and google for places that sell them. You are probably looking at around $2-3k installed, unless you have good relations with a reputable shop or something.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

Sorry to hear about that. 6 bolt engines are easy to come by. I am not sure what you meant about an improperly installed filter, but if it wasn't tight enough or vibrated off, it would show just how important safety wiring your oil filter is. The 6 bolt swap isn't all that hard. I did it when I was 17(not that age has anything to do about it), and I built the entire engine myself aside from machine work.

Depening on the severity of the damage to the head, you might be able to salvage it. I would start by taking off the cam caps, and seeing how bad it was damaged. However running on no oil pressure, I doubt it's any good. Worth checking I suppose? Good Luck.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

Did you have an oil change done at a shop or did you do it yourself. If it was a shop they should pay for a new engine. If it was you you're a dumbass j/p. Good luck.

Well they have a special tool for filters, called a filter wrench. Or some filters have a little place on the end where you can hook up a socket to it. If you use either one of those and tighten the filter down a little tighter than hand tight you should be fine. What they probably did was just start screwing the filter on and forgot to tighten it down.

Tighten it as hard as you can without tools. Any looser and it will vibrate off, like what happened to you. Any tighter and you may strip the rubber seal, and you will have problems again. Also, make sure you put a little bit of oil on the rim of the rubber seal so it seats correctly. A lot of people forget to do this.

The 6 bolt and 7 bolt engines have the same redline, but many people have had more luck modifying the 6 bolt to higher hp levels without changing internals, and not having problems.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

You should wait to do anything tell the shop they need to put in a new engine or you'll talk to a lawyer. You might get lucky and they will just give you the money (say you want it done at a mitsu dealer and bring the an estimate) This will probably be some rediculous amount but by law they will have to pay. Sounds to me like this is a good thing you'll either get a lot of money or a brand new engine from a mitsu dealer.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

Actually, further more then tightening it with your hand, you should be safety wiring it. This means putting a large enough worm screw hose clamp around the oil filter (they aren't strong enough to damage the oil filter), and then put a piece of wiring around it and tie it to something so that the filter can't move.

I believe it might be for autorossing that they check this when the tech is doing over your car. So yeah, it's pretty important. Someone in my club recently had his back off and it spewed oil everywhere. It's not that uncommon that this happens.

Oh, and let me guess, Jiffy lube? Pep boys?

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

Yeah they'd put in a new motor! Wouldn't that be sweet? Good luck hopefully everything will go smoothly.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

I will second Aarons suggestion to safety wire the filter on. I used to blow the filter off weekly. Anyone still on that POS gobshyte bollix of an oil cooler (91-99) should be safety wiring the filter on. Like, today... The 90, galant, or NT housings dont have this problem, but its still highly recomended. The issue is the fact that the oil filter stud is also a bolt that holds on the oil cooler. That can very easily loosen up when you remove the filter, though you can't easily tell. At some point the gasket behind the cooler (which is the same exact part as the oil filter gasket FYI) will blow out or fail, causing the loss of oil, even though the filter may still seem tight on the cooler. That cost me my second crankwalked motor, right after a shop did the oil change. I hate that POS oil cooler. That thing will also mix oil and coolant at the drop of a hat, causing multiple unecessary HG changes. I reeeally hate that POS...

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

What's the best thing to replace the oil cooler with and how much is it?

If you get wheel ramps (~$35), you can easily change your oil. And they are much simpler than a floor jack imo.

Re: 4g63T turbo engine

You can replace the liquid cooler filter housing with -

90 turbo housing - Allows use of a common air cooler

1g 2.0 non turbo housing - no cooler provisions (this is what I like to use)

galant/mighty max/whatever the fuck it's from housing - points filter downward straight forward

They are all 60-70 bucks IIRC.
