WTF is wrong with my car now..........
Well turns out something just broke in my DSM
........ I was driving behind a truck today and I decided to pass him up. So I got over into the right lane and pushed the gas down about half trottle in second gear. Once boost kicked on at about 4600, I started to accelerate pass the truck. I shift to 3rd and being overtaking him...... when all of a sudden the RPM's shoot up and no more power is going to the wheels. The rpms bounce off my 5500 studder box like the car is in neutral, when I never took the car out of third gear. The car just rolls to a stop, Just like it would if you put it in neutral. So I pull over to the side of the road.![]() I mess with the shifter and it's stuck. I won't move out of third gear. I then take my foot of the clutch to see if the car will stall out.... and it didn't. WTF!!!! So I push the clutch in and I Pull the shifter down toward neutral and finally it goes in. Then I take my foot off the clutch and the car says on, but you hear some knocking noise comming from the engine bay......... push the clutch in, knocking noise is gone. take foot off the clutch, Knocking noise is back..... WTF!!!!!!! So I get out of the car to see if I could tell where the noise was comming from. I pop the hood and look down into the engine bay, and the noise seems to be comming from underneath the engine.... I think to myself "I know this has to be a tranny problem..... but secretly hope it's a clutch prob so I can get the damn thing upgraded." So I get back in the car and push the clutch in to stop the dang noise. I'm like a mile from my house so I decide to try and see if I can get it to work enough so I can get home. So I try to put the car in first gear. The Damn thing won't move....... I push it a little harder. and the shifter finally moves in. I try to take it out of first and it comes out and just locks up now in neutral. Like NO AMOUNT OF FORCEING WILL CAUSE THIS TO COME OUT..... Damnit. ![]() So now I think. I remember when my girl blew her tranny in her ZX2, she said neutral became a drivable gear and she was able to get to the dealer like that. So I figure, lets try it. I take my foot off the clutch to see if the car will stall out..... and it does. (Something is F'ed up) I start the car up and I figure that I should be able to drive in neutral. So I rev up the engine and the rpms go up. Soon as I start to slip the clutch to the point where it starts to grab, the rpms go down. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I think, something already broke in there and I wanna go home, So I'm gonna just go for it. I rev it up again this time to about 4000 rpms and I slip the clutch out. Once the clutch is out, the car lurches foward, and then just revs up like the car is in neutral.... (which it technically was in). I think to myself damnit and I let the rpms fall back to idle, thinking it was going to stall out like it did earlier..... It didn't.... WTF NOW!!!!!!! So now the car is actually Idling in neutral like it's suppose to. No knocking noise of anything. Just idling. I mess with the shifter, It moves again, Just like normal. I can go into every gear. I think to myself "What did I just do?" But I'm figure might as well get home now since it's trying to work. So I head home. I put the car into first gear and let of the clutch and give it gas, yeah I'm moving. I granny shift into second. OMG I'm in second. so I'm slowly driving home and I think, might as well try third gear....... I put it in third and ....... third just revs.... So I shift back into second and just keep on going. So third gear is like a neutral now. So I decide to test all the gears. first and second work, third and fourth just rev like the car is in neutral, and fifth gear works. WTF!!!!!!!! So yeah, now it sits in front of my home. While I'm carless now. I Hope it's something not too bad. But It's ALWAYS BAD. BTW yesterday I fixed my boost controller so that the car holds 16psi from 4600 to the 7500 redline. So maybe now that the car is holding that power to redling instead of dropping off....... But People are faster than me on stock trannys....... Should I upgrade the tranny if It's the problem? I'm really starting to think about selling my DSM now..... maybe move to an EVO or TransAM WS6. Only thing is I would hate to sell my car, and get an EVO or TransAM because my car is SO MUCH FASTER THAN THOSE. But I'm thinking about just bying one of those and keeping it stock, except maybe exhaust. I don't know anymore. Or I can buy a daily driver and just have this car chilling at my home. But It's dumb to pay payments on a car you don't even drive........ plus I don't really streetrace that much anymore........ I'm confused. HELP ME DSM BRETHEREN.

I do not know to much about trannys but it sounds like it is shot, maybe just the clutch and the noise you heard was the throw out bearing. I hope the prob is simple tho GL man

3rd-4th are the weakest gears in the 2g tranny. Wish I could help ya out, thats one area I know nothing about!

I know next to nothing about transmissions, but it sounds to my like yours is broken and its fucked up good. That really sucks man, especially since you have so much done to it. Good luck man, I hope you can get everything worked out.

Odds are you took teeth off of third or the center diff, and they are rolling around in the tranny causing more damage while you sit there and play with it
When the car is broke, how much proof do people need that it is broke? Drain the tranny fluid and use a magnet to catch metallic particles. Odds are chunks will come out that are easy to see anyway... If so, just send it to shep and drive it on. Lets see, tranny failures I've had... locked center diff/twisted output shaft broken stock center diff cut a 4 spider diff in half wore out yet another 4 spider took all the teeth off third took teeth off the center diff snapped an input shaft went through about 8 ACT 2600s and 3-4 flywheels Then throw in all the motor swaps, etc. Never once made me want to sell the car. What the fuck would I replace it with?

I had the same problem with my 98 eagle talon. It turned out to be the clutch. I came to a stop sign and it wouldn't come out of 3rd so I turn the car off and held clutch to start and when I hit the ignition the s.o.b bucked like the clutch wasn't engaged. after it bucked it came out of third and wouldn't go into any gear so i turn the car off again and snatch the shifter again and put it in first and when i started it up it bucked but was in first so i putted home. lol. Yours problem sound similar but maybe not the same problem.

i agree, tha exact same thing happened to my ride. it tured out to be the clutch. get it to the shop, it shouldnt cost more the $450 for parts and labor. i cant afford a tow truck, so i just did a double clutch type of thing to pull the shifter back and forth through the gears, cause like yours it was stuck. somthing like its supposed to match the tranny speed to the driving speed, which ultimately guides the clutch in easier.even if that works for you, dont do it to get around, cause i think it kill your tranny after awhile. just get it to the shop the best way you can.
