91 SL2 Strange Noise Problem

91 Saturn SL2
150K Miles
4 Cylinder

This happened a few times.

When I started backing out of my driveway, I just started to cut the wheel. I heard a loud groaning sound that lasted for 2-3 seconds. The sound goes away after that. It happened 3-4 times over the past few weeks under the same circumstances.

I have no idea where to even look.

Any help greatly appreciated!

John

A little more info would help. Front, rear, passenger side, driver side, engine bay, or under the car? My guess would be a belt or pulley (power steering).

Re: 91 SL2 Strange Noise Problem

a whine from the power steering at full lock is normal, this is due to excessive system pressure( the system trying to turn the wheel past the max angle). the high pressure can damage the system and so you should not keep the wheel at full lock for more then a few seconds.

but also check your P/S fluid, if it is low, check the pulley area, a leak from the pump shaft is not uncommon.
