I need to know about what a transmission swapp would cost for a mechanic. I need to change my 2003 Toyota Celica from a manual to an automatic.

Re: help please

why would you go from manul to automatic...depending on if you use junkyard parts, or new parts it gunna cost you about
$1500+ tranny
$1000+new wiering harness, ecu, master cylendar, and lines
figure itll take him 15 hours to do the swap at $100 an hour
$1500 for actual mechaics cost

your lookin at least $4k, more along the lines of 5 or 6

Re: help please

wow really? Going from stick to auto? Damn that sucks, I got a quote from a shop around here and they said they would do a complete 3SGE Beams + Altezza tranny swap on my 84 celica auto for $5K, that's including labor.

Re: help please

yea sigma is right, thats exactly why my bud went frrom manual to auto, he droped a chevy 350 in his car with a turbo 350 tranny....he wants a poure drag car

there is an exception to that rule, whens cars have lift you need to revv to a scertian point, most the time with auto trannys (w/.out shift kits) itll auto switch witch will land you deep out of the power band

Re: help please

That is beyond lame though!!! Half the race when I drag is the skill amounts of the drivers. I have beat cars before racing that were fair amounts faster then mine because they don't know how to drive a manual. Anyone can race in an auto. The clutching, or lack thereof, shows skill, the speed of the shift, the ability to torque or power shift, the double clutching, it all takes skill. In an auto the only races that take much skill are rolling races because you must understand what type of pushing you must do on the gas pedal to get the fastest downshift. That is it!!! Someone go ahead and try to destroy me on this point, but we should probably start another thread if they want to.

Re: help please

oh i feel ya man, but the fact remains that it's still faster and people are using them. It's why drift people are against drag racing, they have the saying "in drag racing it's about fast cars, not fast drivers." But how do you argue about something that is faster in drag racing? The auto will shift faster than any human. Have you seen F1 shifting? I hate it, but it's faster...

Re: help please

you know top fuel dragsters (funny cars) only have 1 speed, theres no time to shift, manual or auto

in any case, true point jay, ive beaten evo 8's, 350z's, and ITR-s up mountains becuase the skill factor... ironically the car that gave me the best run for my money was a v8 mustang (go figure) it was on a REALLY long (10 + mile) backroad, but the worse part is he lived at the top of the hill so he knew the road 18+ years of living on the same wountain will make you remember it like the abck of your hand, i had never been on it, and his car is quicker in the 1/4 than mine so he pulled alot on straightaways...hard keeping up with someone that even knows when to slow down becuase of little bumps in the road, he was also a pretty good driver considering mustangs handle like shit...if my car was just as fast as his it woulda been no prob but hed get about a turn and a half ahead cuz the straights but in the cuts i would get on his ass and end up passn him, in the end i finally got ahead on a stirhgt and never saw him again, when we got to the top he was about a good 20 seconds behind

its all driver there, thats why ive never favored the 1/4, always mountain runs, but a 1/4 is good to do just before a mountian run to show whos car is how much quicker

Re: help please

but stock for stock stick is faster than auto it really depends on the car though. high hp cars with little torque like 7th gens dont do well as auto but engines that have alot of tq do just fine

Re: help please

yea but even a stock auto w a shift kit vs stock manual, the auto will win...as long as you can control where the auto revvs, youll launch better, shift faster and stay in power band better....plus you cant miss shifts on auto
