Ghetto rig this!

I'm trying to get a good deal on an intake, but in the mean time, I thought of something, I was talking with nissanfantic and he told me I coul dget a little more air by taking off the Y pipe that goes into the stock air box, but then I thought, why stop there? So I hacked up the box, like alot, took a whole side out, the side facing the front of the car, anyways, I haven't installed it yet, just done the cutting with a Dremel. I took pics of before and after, just in case all you guys with modded cars don't remember what the stock air box looks like, lol, I'll post them when I get back tonight, along with my findings on this experiment. :-P

Re: Ghetto rig this!

Well I can't get the camera to connect to the comp, lol, but anyways, I drove around last night and it's pretty crazy, gas mileage and power seem exactly the same, but for some reason, when I go over 50% in throttle, the car totally changes sound and sounds like a MUstang GT with a 3 inch straight pipe.

Its because...

Its because the pulsating of your piston firing is making a sound vibration through your intake and your hearing that since the noise isnt muffled by that box...

Re: Ghetto rig this!

Is that what it sounds like when you have like an Injen intake or something?

Re: Ghetto rig this!

Why dont you just make an intake? I mean my uncle and I made one for his 02' dodge caravan. Same principal as a 240. Just a filter of your choice. Cone, round etc. Then get a rubber cuppler from lowes or menards or whatever kind of hardware super stores u have around where u live. Sum fasteners belt things(im not sure what there called. A nozzel run off for the crank case or sumthing. A couple rubbers washers for seals and there you have it a custom cool air intake. And if u need it sum rubber piping. But by the looks of it i dont think u need it. Just run it right off the MAF. My uncles van sounds badass now.The nice WOOOOOOSH sound now....

Re: Ghetto rig this!

Because I rather save the 50$ and put it towards something worth while. My car sounds badass and it's not like an intake like you described will make more power.

Re: Ghetto rig this!

yeah good point lol but im just trying to help your save money. I know what your saying. Once you buy the filter and all the little things u need to make it work it costs nearly 50-70$ and why not just fork out 130$ and get an AEM or whatever u prefer

Re: Ghetto rig this!

I agree with Importboom. If you don't think your car is a piece of shit you might as well make an intake for it.. the only reason I didnt use a mandrel bend tube is because I already had a "cold air intake" if so it could be called.

You should take pride in your car. If you make one from a mandrel bend tube and a round filter of choice you can route it wherever you want it, and feel good about how your custom intake looks and sounds. Plus its fun to laugh at people that pay $100+ for hot air intakes. I know mine doesn't exactly look like its from the store but I haven't painted it yet. Besides my brother and I did it, so I know its done right... when im going 80+ and I punch it, I can tell the ram air effect I get vs. the way it felt before the re-routing job. I mean the freaking tube on stock or aftermarket intakes bolts to and rides along the fucking radiator. Do yourself a favor, pop the hood and put your hand on the intake tube after the next time you ride around.. but be careful it may burn your hand unless its plastic.

Because the intake you pay for will suck donkey balls. I spent less than that including the battery relocation kit and new air filter however, I did start with a hot air intake. This is no weekend long project, 4 hours with a friend at tops. Dedicate your attention to detail while doing it(not cosmetic detail). Trust me, the ram air effect is nice in comparison. You spend less money, you don't have to wait for shipping, and your intake doesn't suck donkey balls. You like the way your stock intake sounds with dremel holes in it? You should hear this style of intake. It just takes a little extra work.

Consider the entire cost:
$30 1 maybe 2 mandrel bend tubes + silicon & clamps
$50 battery relocation kit
$50 Air filter
$0 use your sawsall or someone elses and do the work

Its worth it, just my opinion though.

Re: Ghetto rig this!

I like 7Ms homebuild idea. But make sure you get some ceramic spray paint from wallyworld, paint the outside and inside of the tube to keep it protected and just that tad bit cooler.
