88 Camaro Will Not turn over.

This is for a freinds car and I know little about GM Ignintion Security Systems.

This is an Intermittant problem and heat does appear to
be a factor.

The battery, Starter, Ignition Switch, starter relay, starter,
and entire steering column all have been replaced...some
more than once.

You turn the key and not even a click. The electric fan
shuts off (probably normal) but the headlights do not dim
when engaging the starting position of the ign sw.
All accy's operate fine in the Ign Sw on position.

I suspect the security system or the nuetral safety switch
is the problem. I did jiggle the center console shifter but no
luck there but that does not rule it out as the culprit.

What I need advice on is where is the nuetral safety switch
and does anyone know how to bypass the ignition security
system. This is an 88 model and it is an OEM sec sys with
a keypad on the dash.

You can email me of you wish at [email protected]

Thanks for your help.

Re: 88 Camaro Will Not turn over.

i'd bet a hundred bucks the soldnoid is overheating, (it's right by the exhaust) in which case it won't send current to the starter (you won't hear a click) until it cools sufficiently.

2 possible solutions:

1. Heat shield around the solenoid.

2. Bypass the solenoid on the starter, and run a remote solenoid. Place it somewhere in the engine compartment between the battery and starter. You can get one at Autozone: Wells part # F492, for about $8. I had the same problem with an '89 some years ago, and after moving the solenoid location I never experienced that dreaded no-start for an hour or two again...
