Question Are these good prices for my turbo?

I found someone on ebay that rebuilds turbos. I sent him an e-mail on how much it would cost to rebuild the T-25, then i asked how much more it'd be to make it into a T-28. Here was the response.

Hello...Thank you for your interest. Yes, you can send your turbo to us to have it rebuilt. The T25's and T28's do share the same housing outside dimensions, but the inside dimensions are different. You can have your T25 bored for the T28 compressor wheel and turbine wheel, and make it into a T28. Or, you can just have the compressor housing bored for the T28 compressor wheel and have a T25/T28 hybrid. Depending on how much you would like to spend on your turbo, that would determine which one of these routes you would like to go. For a standard rebuild and boring your compressor housing for the T28 compressor wheel, the price would be $440 (a standard rebuild on its own is $245). The price for the rebuild and replacing the compressor and turbine wheels with new T28 units, and machining the housings, would be $685. All of these prices include return shipping to you.

Porting and polishing would be an additional $100 for the turbine housing, and $50 for the downpipe, and we would recommend doing both of them at the same time or you kind of defeat the purpose, especially on these turbos.

A few specs on the big T28 compressor wheel...it flows 34lbs/min, or enough for approx 340 hp. A standard rebuild for $245, adding the T28 compressor wheel for $195, and porting and polishing the turbine housing and downpipe for $150 would make a really nice direct bolt-on turbo for your Spyder. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

What do you guys think?

For that price, you can go buy a bigger turbo, or find one already ported and polished. Probably for cheaper too

I can get a big 16G for $530 at the local speed shop.... For $440 bucks you might as well just spend another 100 or 200 or so and upgrade.

Re: Are these good prices for my turbo?

alright i found this on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brand...spagenameZWDVW

doesn't seem like a bad price. the main reason i want a T28 is because i don't want to purchase an installation kit, i want the spool to be around stock, and i'm only looking to break 300hp, after i eventually get all the supporting mods. i figure the t28 would be perfect for streetable boost.

for that around that price you can get a 16g with the install kit.

Re: Are these good prices for my turbo?

ok i still haven't really decided on a turbo...i'm really thinking about getting my T25 rebuilt into a T25/T28 hybrid. Having the T25 turbine side w/ the T28 compressor wheel. I have a couple questions about this.

1. Do you think i'd notice any difference in performace from just having the T28 wheel?

2. What psi would i be able to run safely? Before i could run up to 17psi and that was pushing it considering it was a T25. Now i'm thinking I'd have to run less psi because of the bigger wheel equaling more airflow, correct? Unless i started working on fuel components and got DSM link or SAFC, right?

3. My friend bought me a 3ft steel braided line at Summit last night. I know i could reuse the stock oil feed line if i got my turbo rebuilt for hybrid, but i'd rather use the new line. This is just the line. He said Summit didn't have the couplers or banjo bolts I need. Exactly what do i need? What kind of couplings and what pitch threads? I believe it's like a 1.25 but not sure.

Thanks for any help.

Steve

I am currently running that same t-25/t-28 hybrid setup. The turbo spools as fast as the stocker, but the stock housing is an extremely limiting factor. The difference between the stocker and the one I have now is barely noticable. My turbo will handle 25 psi safely without blowing up, but I have not tested that yet so I can't comment on performance gains at max boost. I'm not sure if the turbo pushes enough air at 20 psi to max out the stock fuel system, so I havent experimented yet, plus the car's been in the shop for 1 month now anyways.

I'd rather push more air at 15 psi on a larger housing than have to crank up the boost that much on this little one. Boost equals hot air, and stuff tends to break more...the gist of an extensive theory I bet, severely summarized. I understand that you want to stay away from the swap kit, but go for a larger housing if you can. You want to push as much air as you can at a given boost setting. You'll regret getting the small T-28 or equivalent hybrid, becase I know I am!

I am feeling the burn right now at having blown so much money into the turbo I have now. It spools very, very quickly (around 2.4K), but I would trade mine for an EvoIII16G or similar any day. It's all about airflow...and the stock housing on that hybrid will be an extremely limiting factor, as said before. Save up, get the swap kit and a bigger turbo. A BIG T-28 costs the same as a 16G with install kit, roughly.
