2000 cougar blower motor

I lost the 3 low speeds on the blower motor today. only the #4 setting
(high) works. any ideas on where to start looking? the fan was running
at setting 2 and just died. i opened the hood to see if i could see the blower motor and all i can say is wow.. it that thing packed tight. might the resistor be under dash?

The blower motor is above the passenger's foot compartment, it just twists like 10 degrees counterclockwise to be removed, but it's not you problem, the resistor is about 8 inches toward the drivers side and there is a 4 wire (i think) plugin and it plug straight toward the front. I think it's held in by 2 8mm head screws. Call your dealer though, there is a recall for that same problem on '99 models and I'd bet 2000 also. The resistor melts down and the dealer should fix it for free.
