Need Opinions

I want to get a swap but i cant make up my mind. I am either going to get a B16 and i was wondering would a GSR tranny and ecu match up with a B16 ? And the other is LS with a GSR tranny and ecu? And how much would it cost to make an LS vtec?

Re: Need Opinions

... The ECU has absolutely nothing to do with the bottom end of the motor, or the Transmission. It deals with the head mostly.

So for LS/VTEC... LS block (I would suggest having some PR3, or P30 pistons put in, or Type R if budget allows, if you plan on going All Motor), B16 Transmission (or Type R if you can afford it), B-Series axels, B16 head, and B16 ECU (I can't remember which ECU it is off the top of my head... P30? ). And I would suggest purchasing the LS/VTEC Conversion from Golden Eagle, it's much simpler that way.

Honestly... I'd suggest doing the LS swap first, with a GSR Transmissoin... Something mild to get used to. Then go from there. It's a good base though, you can go in any direction you wish from there.

Just my opinion.

Re: Re: Need Opinions

So in order to make an LS vtec all you have to do is just buy that kit? You dont have to go and buy a B16 or GSR head?

Please tell me your joking!? I mean ZedEx even said "AND buy the G.E. kit" To have VTEC you need a Vtec equipped head. The G.E. kit makes the process of converting a non vtec engine to vtec, if and only if you have a vtec head to use. I agree with him on going mild and then upgrading later to get used to the swap first.

Re: Need Opinions

... Man, get on Honda-Tech and start doing some research. You need to before you even consider doing a swap.

I suggest you start simple... Very simple... And go from there.

That's not saying much I have 2 Honda dealerships in my local area (reasonably close), and they are both completely useless. When my friend worked next door to one of them (at a mitsubishi dealership), they'd send people over to talk to him about swaps or performance parts. Dealerships are worthless unless it's a stock car.

OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
Short answer, no. Do the research man. You'll find more indepth info than you'll get here by asking. This is because the info has been covered so many times that you'll just end up only getting a half-assed short answer. That's why it's important to do searches. Honestly search honda-tech, you'll be happy you did.

Re: Need Opinions

... You'd have the B20's amazing Torque, and the GSR's top end Horse Power. The only problem with the B20 is the Bore. Which is 84mm. Other B-Series engines (B18A/B, B18C5, B18C1, B16A, B16B, etc) are all 81mm Bore.

Meaning, that you cannot interchange any pistons with the B20. Why would you want to do that anyway, you ask?

Well it's simple... With different combinations of pistons, and head configurations, Compression Ratio will rise with a proper set-up. Example: PR3 pistons in an LS Block, with a B16A head, will yield a near 12.4:1CR, as opposed to the stock LS Compression Ratio, which is around 9:1 (I can't remember the exact number).

So, the only O.E.M pistons that will fit the B20B's 84mm Bore, are the B20Z's PHK Pistons. Bringing the Compression Ratio up SLIGHTLY, but enough to be noticed, definately.

The B20/VTEC is amazing for All Motor applications, however, for boost... No Bueno. The stock sleeves on the B20 can take about 7-8psi before they give. And Dart sleeving isn't what you'd call, cheap.

I was planning on building a B20/VTEC All Motor monster... With the 88mm Bore JE pistons, Eagle Rods (Near 2.2liter), and B16A head with CTR cams. Mild, but it would certainly rev deep past 9,000RPM, and would provide some nasty torque and low end power.

Anyway man, just get on Honda-Tech, and don't post until you search. You need to learn the art of searching on HT though, if you're searching for, let's say 'LS swap'. Search for 'LS' 'B18B' 'B18' 'B18A' 'swap' etc. Give it a few different shots, and one is bound to contain what you're looking for.

Re: Need Opinions

We've got one... B18B Engine, GSR Transmission, Axels, Crower 404 Camshafts (Almost the best Camshafts for Non-VTEC)... It's the entire swap. All you would need are mounts, AVID, HASport, whatever.

I'll call the owner of the swap and see if he's sold it yet. I'll let you know.
