Question 2000 Cherokee code P0740 torque converter

2000 Jeep Cherokee /w AW4 trans, bought new and maintained as scheduled.
At 37,000 mile the check engine light came on (code P0740)
Dealership replaced 2 trans. solenoids. Two days later light came on again and they replaced the solenoids again. Two days later light came on again. This time they said we needed a new transmission. We continued using it until it went out at 71,000. Immediately after the rebuild the code P0740 came on; they had cleared it They had replaced the torque converter. Solenoids were replaced again. No change. A electronic diagnosis was done. TCU and harness all checked okay. Had another shop rebuild it. New torque converter, solenoids the works... light and code still on. Vehicle is used on a mail route. The driver does not drive with "two feet." (brake and gas at same time) Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the lengthy message but it could have been longer.

Re: 2000 Cherokee code P0740 torque converter

When did it launch the code PO740 after the overhauls? - On the test drive or after it had been used on the mail route for a day, week or month?

Some questions to ask your transmission expert......

Might it have anything to do with the stop and go driveing being learned by the computer driiving style section??

Is there a setting in the computer that they can program the torque converter lockup differently??

If the solenoids are truly failing, they should be able to come up with a reason and that code doesn't automaticly mean that there is something wrong with the solenoid.

Re: Re: 2000 Cherokee code P0740 torque converter

JD,
Thanks for replying. After the overhaul there was no code after the test drives. One time it coded before she ever got to the route but the majority of the time it's about one to three hours into the route. Sometimes it codes when going up hill sometimes when running on level road. There's really no pattern to it. I'll ask the transmission man about the "driving style section" when I see him tomorrow. They don't seem to think the lockup torque converter is the problem. They say that comes into play at 45mph and she hasn't been running that fast when it threw the code. Not counting the torque converter that came in it, it is on it's third converter. I read that the solenoids can be tested with a meter. I'm sure that they are aware of it. I've wondered about that as well.
Thanks again.
