Keys....

I Just got a 98 Explorer XLT but i have this werid thing when starting up... i went and got these spare keys made in case i locked the ones i got from the dealer inside the car. So whenever i try to start up with the spare keys the engine tries to start but wont start up. But when i use the real keys that came with the car it started up fine..... so is there is some kind of special sensor in the key that will make the car start with the real keys but not the ones i got made??? the keys that came with the car have a black covering where u would hook a keychain through and i was wondering theres some kind of sensor in there??

Thanks

Re: Keys....

There is a resistor/reciever in the black portion. The plain keys you had made will open the doors, but not start the vehicle. You need to purchase a coded key and program it. If you purchase the coded key, post back and we will post the programming procedure.

Re: Keys....

You can do so at the dealer but expect to pay way too much. Try eBay.

Re: Keys....

PATS keys are only available from Ford, Linc, Merc dealers. They also need to be added to the list of keys recognized by your vehicle's PATS system to start our vehicle so I'm afraid Ebay can't help you now! Only Ford scanners can aquire security access to PATS system functions after alot of headache! So you need to see a dealer to have copies made, and plan on haveing all the keys you intend on useing in hand because they will all need to be reentered at the same time. Any others will no longer work so the PATS key you find under the sofa cushions 2 days later won't be recognized by your car! Unless you add it to the bunch and pay AGAIN!

Re: Keys....

Look in your phonebook for a locksmith. I got my keys for my 04 Ranger and 03 Explorer from locksmith. As to reprogramming you must have at least two existing and working keys plus your new one. As to reprogramming you place key into ignition and turn it on and off five times in rapid succession and the power door lock will cycle. Place 2nd key in and turn on and off five times, then place your 3rd key and do the the same. Now all 3 keys are programmed. You must do all 3 keys in the same session. This method works for the 03 and 04 Fords. Can only think it's same for your vehicle. Look within this forum for key reprogamming for threads on this.
