My engine had been running hot lately and this was the diagnosis my regular mechanic gave. Unfortunately, he can't fix it and i've been told that is might run a minimum of $500 (probably more) to fix.
I've been doing some of the simple fixes on my own and am wondering if this is a task I'd be able to do myself. I am a pretty competent guy but don't have a ton of experiene with large fixes. So, 1. Is that cost in the ball park? 2. Should I even consider doing it myself? |

Re: Blown Head Gasket - 96 Firebird V6
Well check and see how much work it would be to pull the heads off of that V6. If you are willing to give it a try it would be a lot less than 500 dollars but it would take some time and effort. I don't trust people who work on my cars because it isn't theirs so they don't really give to shits.

Re: Blown Head Gasket - 96 Firebird V6
that's one reason i am asking. i trust my regular mechanic and wish he could do it. now, unless i do it, i will be dealing with someone new.

Re: Blown Head Gasket - 96 Firebird V6
Hmmm. Have you checked on how much work it would be? I've changed the head gasket on a cavalier, talon and 626 but they were all 4 cylinders.

Re: Blown Head Gasket - 96 Firebird V6
i've talked to my mechanic again... it's definitely out of my league to fix. might need a new water pump, too. he recommended someone, so that's what i'll go with for now.
thanks for your help, though. |
