Replacing A/C Compressor

My '97 Blazer has an A/C leak in the compressor - requiring a replacement. I've found a reman compressor w/ 1yr warranty for ~ $189 from a local parts house.
1. Can I change the compressor myself (as there is no R-134a charge due to the leak) or does it need to be taken to a certified shop?
2. After the compressor is replaced, will the A/C system need to be evacuated prior to adding the 134a charge?

1. Yes, replace it yourself.

2. Vacuum out the system (rent a unit from a parts store like Autozone)
You need to evacuate the system to clear out any air introduced while replacing parts.

Get yourself a recharging kit with gauges from a parts store. (Interdynamics is a popular brand. The kit should contain all the stuff listed next- about $50.00)
You'll need an 8 0z. can of oil and at least 2 12 oz. cans of R134A.
When filling , the oil goes in first, then with engine running, turn AC to max, fan on high and install R134A.

Re: Replacing A/C Compressor

You should also replace the accumulator at the same time as the compressor (or any major part). Some of the oil goes in the accumulator and some in the compressor. The directions that come with the compressor should tell you how much to put in it. Check your owners manual to find out how much refrigerant you need. I believe it's 30 oz. Good luck.

Go to a shop and they will remove the R134a for free for you.

Re: Replacing A/C Compressor

These compressors are bad about leaking at the joint in the body. Here's a picture that I posted when mine was leaking:

If it is the body of the compressor that is leaking, you can repair it with JB Weld.

If you must replace the compressor, it is a good idea to replace the accumulator and the orifice tube as well. (It is also required for most warranties) Don't use the 8 ounce cans of oil. Get an 8 ounce bottle of PAG150 oil. Pour the oil directly in the compressor and the accumulator and then turn the compressor by hand to make sure that you get a good initial prime. (This will insure that your compressor is properly lubed) You can fill the system your self and it will work fine, but it will work much better if you have a shop pull a vacuum on it then do a proper fill.
