Gonna make my first box

I'd go for sealed instead of porting if you want the bass to be tight. I find that ported subwoofers seem to be more "boomy" at certain frequencies. But if the design is right, a ported subwoofer won't sound too bad. If that's the sound you're going for, then no problem. I THINK people make their boxes with MDF-type plywood. It's pretty durable shit.

most people use 5/8" or 3/4" MDF, it doesn't vibrate as badly. Use a good wood glue for all joints and use screws to help hold it together. Most people use silicone to seal the seams after the box is built and the glue is dried.

Ports are a whole nother animal ....... you need to get a good book on it, and do some searches on the internet. winisd is a free program you can download to help with figuring box sizes.

MDF is used over because of it's consistancy. There aren't gaps or knots like there are in solid wood, plywood, flake board, etc. Particle board also gets used alot but MDF I believe is the prefered substance. It's also fairly easy to work with although it does weigh quite a bit.

How to fasten it together is part of how you design it. Plain wood screws will work find but you could also use other fastening methods depending on the look that you desire. Wood glue or construction adhesive also should be used.

It's also impossible for us to say "how to port a sub". How to port is dependent on the type of enclosure, positioning of the speakers, what type of frequency response you want, speaker specifications. Sound engineers went to college for a reason.

First things first: Find out the volume the enclosure should be. Each speaker has specs you can look up, it'll tell you volumes for sealed, ported, and bandpass boxes. Make sure to measure your trunk as well. First box I made, spent three days making it then tried to put it in the trunk and it wouldn't fit!
