Unhappy 99 Grand am se Warning DO NOT REMOVE STEREO?

PLEASE HELP!!!!! I just bought a 99 grand am se and already have high end stereo equipment. Gmc is telling me that if I remove my stock stereo I have to buy a $150 box to tie the stock stereo into the trunk and run it to my new deck. They say this because the chip for all of the codes or something in the car are located in the stock deck and if I remove it to install my new deck all by it's self they say the car will completley shut down? I get what their saying but all of the car audio stores I've talked to say that they didn't start that until 2001 in the grand am and 2000 in the grand prix. I am getting the car delivered to me in 7 days. I need to know if I can pull the stock deck out and run my new deck with amps and subs without much worries or should I buy this crap their telling me to?
I hope someone can help......
Also from the people that say I don't need it say the worst that could happen would be that I would lose the chimes for the doors and other warnings....I don' know about you but I can see lights on the dash, I don't need the car reminding me every 5 minutes that my windsheild wiper fluid is low....very annoying....Please help

Re: 99 Grand am se Warning DO NOT REMOVE STEREO?

I don't know about introducing new equipment, but I've certainly pulled my stock stereo out out of my '99 GA while working behind the center of the dash, and it didn't affect anything else.

Re: 99 Grand am se Warning DO NOT REMOVE STEREO?

Welcome puffy780. i think someones just blowing smoke up your tailpipe. AS long as the Security feature is turned off you shouldnt have any trouble. I've had the factory radio in my 99 SE out, tried another sterio didnt like it so i put the factory one back in. I just resently bought a 01 GA SE took it to Best Buy and they installed a new deck and never mentioned anything aboot codes or putting the factory one in the trunk. Thats krazy! I think the Dealershits are just trying to make a buck.

If anyone knows anything different please let ME know. xero

Re: 99 Grand am se Warning DO NOT REMOVE STEREO?

As far as I know, all of the security info. that could prevent the car from starting is stored in the BCM which is certainly not part of the radio, and that's true of any Grand Am that I am aware of from '99 on.

Re: 99 Grand am se Warning DO NOT REMOVE STEREO?

That's crap. I had a 99 GT and I had am aftermarket stereo and a 7 inch tv in it with subs and a amp and I did no such thing. That only thing that you would have to pay a 100 dollars for is a relay that allows you to change the radio station for your cd player from the steering wheel (if you have that option) and even at that it is not required to put that in.
