2001 Elantra in terrible accident. Check out the pictures.

Follow this link to see the pictures:

http://mammes.homedns.org:7777

This was my brother's car. A 2001 Elantra 2.0 GLS Automatic with 45K miles. According to witnesses he fell asleep while driving at 70mph, drove off the freeway and wrapped the car around an illumination tower (light post, or whatever you call the big tall lights). Luckily he was alone in the car because the front passenger would have died for sure.

The car was totalled, ended up in a junk yard, and the insurance company paid 100% damages. With that money my brother bought a 2001 Corolla.

Please leave your comments here in this thread. The pictures are worth the bandwidth and the time.

Re: Elantra 2001 in accident. Check out the pictures

The car did not have an airbag, not that it would have really made a difference or even been triggered because it was a side crash. He had his seat belt fastened, but the driver's seat went off its rail and he flew out the rear window glass, head first.

His upper body ended up on the trunk and his legs on the back seat. Luckily a car stopped and the driver moved his head because he was not able to breath, his face was getting purple. The ambulance was there in a couple of minutes and rushed him unconscious to the hospital.

It was a miracle. No internal bleeding or blood clogs in the brain, the CAT scans were perfect. The injuries he had were a small fracture in his left cheek due to having hit the driving wheel, another small fracture in his sternum due to the snap of the seat belt, a lot of pain in his left collarbone also due to the safety belt, and a lot of bruises. No broken or cut arms and legs. Some minor cuts in the face due to flying shuttered glass. A big headache and dizziness for about a month.

He is still thanking God since his one year old daughter would have lost her father. He was reborn.

This really made me think about the risks we take everyday when we drive, and how we bitch about meaningless things. It really put things in perspective.

Ouch, that's crazy.

BTW: you sure that's a 2001? I thought that body style ended with 2000 and they switched to the new one in 2001.

My brother crashed in somewhat the same way, but not having his seatbelt on saved his life. Not sure what he was driving, but he was alone and fell asleep at the wheel, and they say he would have been cut right in half at the abdomen if he had his seatbelt on.

Sorry to hear about your brother, good thing he's doing well now though! You sure that was a 2001 because I have a 2001 and it has the newer body style...I agree with everyone else in that he's lucky to be alive.
