getting engine out

What do you guys use to take an engine out? I mean I could get a hoist, but it looks sort of pricy. I wondering if there is any cheaper way to build something similar? I am starting to get more proffesional and buying/working on camaros become my part time job while i am in college. And it actually brings money. I cant see myself working some 8 dollar part time shitty job. So I am gonna rent someones garage (3 car one) since I live in a apartment.

Re: Re: getting engine out

If you don't know anyone that could loan you one, I'd call around and find somewhere near you that would rent it.

You could run some chains over the rafters and use a come-along (manual winch) but the immense stress your putting on them is kinda playing with fire.

Re: getting engine out

I did it out the top with a pep boys cherry picker, like 3 times now. If you take your time, its not that bad of a job although with a lift, its a snap.

Re: getting engine out

Formula, i was pondering on getting one of those, but now i think i will. The kid i got the Flowmaster from had one and they were using it for everything. Not that expensive either (yeah, i got a nerve to say that, i'm broke).

Re: getting engine out

Don't get them from ebay. Go to autozone or pepboys or strauss. The shipping they charge on ebay will kill you and pep boys always have them on sale and mine has worked like a pro for 2 - 3 years now.

Re: getting engine out

nope, the engine slides forward once it comes out of the motor mounts. Taking the engine out is the easy part. Although aligning the tranny pins in the block with a cherry picker takes nerves of steel.

btw if you decide to go Mr. Luos route withthe jack stands and a harness and you find your self under the car trying to get the jack stand pin out and it dont wanna come out, take a deep breath and check to make sure the car isnt resting on the jacks.

Re: getting engine out

Harbor Freight has cherry pickers really cheap. I got my engine stand there for about $60. I don't think the picker was much more than that. I'd check to see if you have one somewhere around where you live.
