tranny

i have a little problem. My car grinds from upshift 1-2 and downshift 3-2. It is only in 2 gear so it is not the clutch and it is fine if i start it in 2nd or shift from 1st and wait like 3 seconds and then shift in to 2nd. I took it to a shop and they said it is the sync. for 2nd (no clue what that is) and they said i need a whole new tranny and it would cost 1700 for a rebuild and about 3000 for a neew one I was just wondering if that is an ok price and if i really need a whole new transmission. thanks.

Re: tranny

I was thinking synchro as soon as i read grind 1-2 2-3... 1700 seems about right for a base rebuild, but you can have an independent tranny shop build it up pretty good for you for probably around that or a little less than that. You dont HAVE to get a new tranny, but if you're just going to rebuild it back to stock i would just get a new one, cause after labor it's going to be about the same prices as opposed to them just pulling and replacing.

Not sure if you wanted a stock tranny or a built one. I have a stock tranny sitting in my garage from when I installed my new one. The thing is in great condition, only 45k on it. I took it out because I was looking for a lsd and found a complete tranny with one already installed. Not sure what shipping would be to you. I'm in Michigan.

Re: tranny

Before I begin, it would be much easier to help you if you have your car info in your signature. Anyways, IMO buying a brand new tranny would be a waste of money since they are listed @ over $2000. Many used japanesse part shops will sell used one's for much cheaper. Buying a used tranny could be risky, but many of them usually give a 3 month warranty. Keep in mind that it takes aprox. 4hrs to remove tranny and 3 to 4hrs to install. If your AWD then it will take longer. You are looking @ a minimum of 7-8hrs of labour charges (just for swapping) not including parts. Explore your options.
