Removal JGC Neutral Safety Switch 1993
I`m having trouble removing the Neutral Safety switch in my Grand, it is a 6cyl limited model Auto, with select trac. Ive been experiencing intermitent starting troubles that I believe I have traced to the neutral safety switch. It appears to be held in place by 1 -10mm bolt and one nut that threads onto the shaft coming from the transmission. I have removed the nut and lock plate and one small rubber seal type flat washer, as well as the 10mm bolt that holds the swith to the tranny, the switch acts loose as it will pivot freely about 6 or 7 degrees circularly around the shaft, however it will not budge as far as sliding it off the end of the shaft. Does the tranny need to be in a specific gear? for removal? anything I`m missing? the tranny is instaled in the car so it is hard to see around the exhaust etc.

Re: Removal JGC Neutral Safety Switch 1993
This is a quick summary of the replacement of the NSS on the AW-4 tranny... (after raising and supporting the front end of the jeep)........
1. Unplug the switch. 2. Pry up on the washer lock tabs and remove the switch retaining nut and tabbed washer. 3. Remove the switch adjusting bolt. 4. Slide the switch off the manual valve shaft. 5. Disconnect the shift linkage rod from the shift lever on the left side of the transmission. 6. Rotate the manual lever all the way to the rear, then rotate the lever forward two detent positions to neutral. 7. Install the switch on the manual valve shaft and install the switch adjusting bolt finger tight. Don't tighten the bolt yet. 8. Install the tabbed washer and manual valve shaft and install the switch retaining nut. Tighten the nut to 61 in-lbs. (5 ft-lbs), but do not bend down the washer lock tabs yet. 9. Make sure the transmission is in neutral and rotate the switch until the neutral standard line on the housing lines up with the vertical groove in the manual valve shaft. 10. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 108 in-lbs (9 ft-lbs) and bend the washer tabs lock tabs over the switch retaining nut. 11. Plug in the electrical connector, connect the shift linkage, lower the vehicle and check the switch operation to make sure the starter operates in PARK and NEUTRAL only. Be sure to be firmly apply the parking brake when making this check. |

What was the issue you were having with you starting that lead you to believe it was the NSS?

Re: Removal JGC Neutral Safety Switch 1993
It might just be the NSS, it prolly needs cleaned.
or.... it could be the shift cable is out of adjustment. I have this same problem well similar, except it happens whenever, no perticular moment. If I push the shift lever forward, or hit it forward it will start. JUST A THOUGHT! |
