detonation sensor

ok big problem, maybe
what happens when a 84 turbo doesnt have the detonation sensor hooked up?
can i disconnect it and not see too much if any difference at all?
or will it function as if the sensor is sensing knock all the time?
anybody know also is there a resistor i could put in its place?
all at the chance of horrid knock detonation and engine failurte is of no meaning if it functions properly without it you just lose that as a fail safe would be ok with me

and the other alternative does anybody haave one off of a 84 to 86?
and want to sell it that is

and if your wondering how i know its bad when i went to disconnect it half the sensor was in the clip and i dont think its supposed to be.... broke in half ....
but anyway any helkp would be appreciated
and reason being i dont have 170$ to replace it

Re: detonation sensor

well, i know as far as the Z32 goes, if you have the knock (detonation) sensor unplugged, the ecu reads it as the engine is detonating. if you are the daring type, you can put a 1 megaohm resistor into the connection that goes to the ecu, which tricks the ecu into thinking everything is ok, but the bad thing is that if your engine does detonate, your ecu doesnt know that so it will do nothing about it.

Re: detonation sensor

hmm... as far as i can tell, the detonation sensor only operates and sends a voltage when the engine is actually detonating, so technically if you couldn't replace it, you could measure the resistance of the sensor and simulate that resitance and the ecu should read that there is nothing wrong... that's only in theory tho.. it's up to you if you want to try it out

and in comes the 1 megaohm resister, at least thats the size you would use for the Z32.

Re: detonation sensor

ok, but what about the z31?
mines 84
i dont think i can test mine since its snapped in half and i dont see any thing that i could ohm off of....
anybody got a digi ohm meter and a z31 boosted wanna lend a helping ohm test......
i guess that i could always takie a test run with out it and see if its ok or not....
but is that a chance worth taking or is failure eminent......
any help would be appreciated
also maybe you should tell the guy with the z32 det. problem to try the resistor and see if that cures his problem instead of sending him through the grueling upper intake mission
but thanks for the knowledge lent i will remember it for if i ever get a 32
also that could have helped my local z32 buddie his went bad and he was lost on it for weeks

Re: detonation sensor

well, i have the resistor on my detonation sensor. it has been working good. the reason i just threw the resistor on there is because 1) my car is non-turbo, so the risk of it detonating is significantly less than a turbo car and 2) i just got done putting the upper plenum back on and i didnt really feel like taking it back off

Re: detonation sensor

no det sensor on 86 na.....
i read somewhere that the 83 280 has on e that will interchanmge but the part numbers dont match...... also advanced said they dont even have a detonation sensor as where auto zxone can get one ... so i guess they have one ..... allthough i couldnt find it on the 280.. so maybe the 280 doesnt have it not sure.....
well i also was wondering is it a 2 wire sensor or only one? if its 2 it never worked since i got the car if its 1 with a sheathing its intacted ....... also gonna try and ohm test the broken sensor and with any luck i may be able to get a reading
thanks for the suggestions
