What do you mean 'expensive', it's only 0.99£.

It looks real. So does the gear shifter and the piston/con rod/valve combo he has listed in separate auctions.

It's not really uncommon for stuff like this to show up on Ebay. With the GTRs, there were lots of spare parts over the years.

Re: Crazy!

Strange how the picture shows the "McLaren" at the top right in the actual motor, and it's on the bottom right in the item. The "BMW" is also reversed. Wonder if the other side is the same--they might be different on purpose, to make sure that the correct one is bolted on. Peloton, others....got reference pics for both sides?

Good eye F1. Seems like every reference photo I have is reversed like you noted on pic of the motor.

I looked at both driver and passenger sides of some of the cars and they were positioned the same: Mclaren on the upper right and BMW M Power on the lower left on both sides.

Wonder why this one's different?

I noticed that too, and had the same thoughts that you did - 'maybe the other side was reversed'. I should have gone looking earlier.

I've now gone through every folder of images that I've got and there hasn't been a single F1 engine photographed where the valve cover had matching markings to the one in the Ebay auction. In ALL cases that I have reference on, the "McLaren" logo is ALWAYS on top, and the "BMW M Power" logo is ALWAYS on the bottom on both sides of the engine. Even on the XPs and GTRs that I have reference on it doesn't match. Also on the Noble GTR-based F1 mule, "Edward", which supposedly had the first ever S70/2 V12 fitted, the valve cover I can see is not the same.

Now it does appear the valve covers could be interchangable from left to right, as on the left side of the car the McLaren logo is towards the rear of the engine, and the BMW M Power is towards the front. On the right side of the engine those placements are reversed. Maybe the part isn't reversible though, and they just used the same milling program to cut out the logos, assuming they weren't cast in.

Since there's little chance someone is making these in their spare time - and if someone was you'd think they would get it right - I'm going to guess and say this is an early piece and that McLaren decided they wanted their logo on top. That's all I can think of, but who knows. Someone should ask the seller...

No copy of Driving Ambition on your bookshelf yet?

They have a chapter devoted to the cars called "The Heavenly Twins". It's one of my favorites because it offers something you might never know about the F1 development if they had never written the book.

I'll get some up later.

Agree wholeheartedly ... was the first guy in Holland (apparently) to own his copy.
