For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

just for shits and giggles im gonna run this one by you, just a little more evidence to some owners of a "perfomrance and audio" shop.
Ive already looked up time slips and M3's are running low 13's consistantly and Evo VIII's (your base modle in america making high 200 some odd horse power, not the 450hp one) are running mid-low 13's with a GREAT driver that knows how to launch a high powred AWD vehicle. so far the best ive seen from people in the "skill" level of these people (used to driving FWD cars) is low 14's with 2+ sec 60' times

Stock M3, the newer ones with 333hp 6-speed, coupe i geuss
and Stock Evo VIII base modle in america.

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

I'd much rather have an M3, but for the money the EVO is a better performance value, where the M3 is just a better vehicle.

I'm not real sure what kind of answer you're looking for though.

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

Both vehicles will hit low 13's all day long, the Evo having stronger low-end acceleration and the M3 having stronger top-end acceleration. Handling is debatable, but I'd give it to the Evo, it seems to put up better overall times. The M3 is heavier and more luxurious, so I'm not shocked that the Evo matches it in performance, but yes, the M3 is the better overall car.

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

and im spekaing Street racing, drag racing type deal. and acordint to factory specs M3's run to 60 in 5 flat and Evo's in like 5.3. he now also informed me it will wax an STi as well...i think he has an evo fetish and thats all (money is not of essence here)

Here are some Factory Specs to Throw around since 1/4miles times are 100% of driver skill and knowledge.

M3:
-Weight- 3415lbs
-bhp- 333
-Drive Line- 6 speed manual RWD Limited Slip Differential
-0-60- 5sec

EvoVIII:
-Weight- 4222lbs
-bhp- 271
-Drive Line- 5 speed Manual AWD Limited Slip differential (center and rear)
-0-60- Not Avalable From Source

WRX STi:
-Weight- 3262lbs
-bhp- 300bhp
-Drive Line- 6 speed Manual Limited Slip Differential (Front, Center, and Rear...meaning all 4 tires have to brake traction)
-0-60- Not avalable from source

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

surprisingly, the M3's 60' time isnt far behind the Evo's...i geuss that is that Limited slip at work with some stickey rubber. so far the only unmodded proof of a slip that i can find online is a 14.39 but that is a with a 2.3sec 60' so you figure they can put down 1.8's that is around 13.4 1/4 theoredically... and asumeing driver error for not being the best shifter in the world (since he doesnt know how to launch an AWD) lets say 13.3 best... have a slip of a stock M3 running a 13.12... 0.2sec is at least a few car lengths when you get into the 100's ;-)

he also informed me that htey are running mid 14.s i think he is thinking of either the BMW 3 series or the Z3....both of which are no where near an M3 or Evo...

C&D numbers for the Evo VIII and the E46 M3

Evo VIII MR- 0-60 in 4.8; 0-100 in 12.6; 0-130 in 25; 1/4 mile in 13.6; rolling start (5-60) in 6.3

BMW E46 M3- 0-60 in 4.5; 0-100 in 11.2; 0-130 in 20.1; 1/4 mile in 13.1; rolling start (5-60) in 5.2

The Evo is a MR edition, w/ 276 hp, 286 lb-ft, and a 6 speed
The M3 is a 6-sp manual, with options that make the car weigh 3,500+ lbs

For a $30,000 car ($36k for the MR), the Evo is a very solid sports car. Its generally considered to be a great buy for auto enthusiasts. It also has the advantage of being turbocharged, and therefore has the potential for much more power then its putting out stock. The M3 is a very different car. The N/A S54 engine is alot better at getting power when you need it then the Evo's. The M3 is stronger, and has a better power to weight ratio. This is just performance we are talking about though, I will only briefly mention how vastly superior BMW 3-series interior is compared to the Evo's.

The Evo is a joy on the track, but doesn't have the road manners of the M3.

EVOVIII's supossed to be a ton of fun when you really want to fly, but it doesn't have the manners when you don't...Its just too much of a go cart for those long trips or slow drives...makes me wonder why they don't make a factory boost controller so you could just drop the boost when you don't need it

Racing I think id give the M3 a slight advantage for its top end power, but basically everything else (minus price) clearly goes to the M3...

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

thanks guys, when i get home from work ill print this out and give some more proof that an Evo will not walk all over an M3 like he thinks. IMO 30k for a new Evo vs 35-40k for a used M3 (2003ish) the M3 is a far better deal. and cars like the M3 are thoes which are consantly geting repo'd and confiscated by police because either people 1.) think they can aford them and cant, or 2.) can afford them being a street pharmasist and get caught...there for their car gets impounded and they are in jail so they cant get it out. so it gets sold at auction.

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

Comparing new vs. used is a bad idea, because it's just not really fair. Brand new, you'd be hard-pressed to find an E46 M3 for less than $55,000; the new Evolution MR goes for $35,000. So, it's $20,000 cheaper, and it offers very comparable straight-line performance (and in my opinion, better handling). You can argue that the M3 is a much more civilized, much more luxurious car all day, but the fact remains that the Evolution is a far better performance buy.

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

i never said to take price into account in the performance aspect, if yo uare looking for a gokart to run kids with on weekends...by all emans pick up an Evo...if you want the sheer sexiness of a finley tuned German engineered naturally asperated inline six with the luxury compareable to bently or rolls royce... BMW M3 / M3 all the way

Re: For Poops and Giggles, New M3 vs Evo VIII

And you can find a good condition, low mileage Evo 8 for the price of a standard WRX. I don't see where you're going with this. And what do you mean, don't take price into account? Do you expect everyone to just suck the M3's dick and proclaim it as the greatest car ever made, ignoring all negatives? Yes, it's an overall better package than the Evo, but you have to pay for it, bottom line. You can have your "finely-tuned German car" when my "go-kart for kids" smokes you at the track for half the price.
