pushrods and rotating rocker arms

we took the engine apart to exchange the intake manifold gasket, but we did not lable the pushrods when we removed them from the rocker arms. How can we find out to put them back in the right order? Any suggestions?

Too late now! But as long as the ends are smooth and shiny you should be just fine. Run a piece of wire through them to make sure they are not clogged up. Also look at the rocker arms if you find anything wrong with them.

The rods have diff. lengh we had them in, but (I guess) wrong because the car is not driving right.

Well it is too late now, the damage is done.
With the wrong pushrods installed, you have bent some valves..time to pull the heads off

Re: pushrods and rotating rocker arms

Exhaust is the long one 6" and intake is the short one 5 3/4". If you follow the path of the manifolds they will tell you which valve is which.

Maybe he got lucky and didn't place one of the pushrods on the cam properly.

Then he should play the lottery!
The chances of getting those pushrods in the right position if he didn't mark them when he took them out is slim and none.

At least he saved money doing it himself

As what you mean is label the ones if you are going to re use them??
If you have the exhaust push rod tube correct size and intake tube correct size it not that important... If you are worried than just buy a new set of push rods. But just make sure the correct size is in exhaust and intake.. I have seen most mechanics just throw them to the side. Come back later and put back in.. in no real order just correct sizes in the exhaust and intake sides. You may have to adjust the valves a little. what happens is the wear on the push rod may throw the valves off a little.. If you never got it fully running it may not have done much damage.
