Re: when im 16

depends on where you live, population & traffic basically. i'd say learn on an automatic, but everyone should someday learn how to drive a manual. tricky thing about a manual is that if you're not accustomed to driving one, then learning in a city with a lot of traffic is a little dangerous. driving a manual you gotta worry about the clutch and shifter, so that's 2 more things to worry about/pay attention to when you're just beginning to drive and all of your attention should be on the road and cars around you.

i didn't learn how to drive a manual until i was 17/18 yrs old. once you understand the mechanics of it (learn here at www.howstuffworks.com ) then its pretty simple adn just takes getting used to. but i didn't own a manual car until i was 19.

oh, and my reply in your other post about the VR4, disregard that. a 222hp car will be plenty powerful enough for you at 16. or if you get a 238hp RX8, that will be plenty of power as well.

the final say is with your parents: whether or not they want you to learn on a manual or automatic.

Re: when im 16

I'm not trying to bash ya or ne thing, but even a base 3kgt is a little on the powerful side for a new driver, you might be better of gettin' yourself a 91-96 base model stealth. They still have decent pep, and when you're ready to upgrade, you have that nice 3kgt already waiting for ya.

As Linebckr said, learning manual is tricky at first, but if you wanna' go ahead and learn, than more power to ya. I learned to drive an auto at 15, and a few months later I learned stick, but I never really perfected it for a while. But you know what they say, practice makes perfect... Good luck with w.e. you decide to do!

Re: when im 16

unless ur parents want to buy a new clutch I would go get a rental car and bash that shit out of it. btw I dunno if your parents will let you drive it much at all. the insurance on these things are expensive. Not only are you under 25 your a male and your not married. All these things hike insurance rates way up. One more thing to consider 3ks take preminum gas is not the cheapest thing to be driving when your 16

Suggestion -
Depending on how close you are with your mother or father, I would suggest you go with one parent and frequent used car dealers around your area. Find a reasonably sporty car you like (for me it was a 2g eclipse gs) with a manual and have the parent request a test drive to see how the car drives for their 'soon to be driving' son.

If all goes according to plan, you should be able to just ride shotgun for a block until the parent pulls over to let you drive (assuming the employee of the dealership doesn't ride with you).
Find a small road or large parking lot and practice clutch control and stopping. These are very important things to get used to if you're looking to be dealing with a manual for your starting car.
After about 15 minutes dealers start to kind of get suspicious so I'd suggest keeping the sessions short and test a max of 2 cars per dealership.

My dad and I did this to get me more experienced with driving a manual and it helped. It also helped me realize I wasn't quite ready for a manual (tourists and old people crowd the streets) so I started off with a base 93 3000GT automatic (still had the 222hp engine) and it was SUCH a nice car while it lasted. Unfortunately the car threw a rod after it crossed the 130,000 mile mark and boom...

Now I do the sr20det s13 thing but I'll always miss that 3000GT, they are the best looking cars out there.
