94 RS 4 cyl. engine making whining noise

I have a '94 Cavalier RS 4 cyl. Just recently, the engine is making a whining noise that gets louder and higher pitched as the RPMs increase. I took the car in shortly after discovering the noice for an oil change and had the mechanic inspect the belts and fluid levels for the power steering, brakes, and coolant. They found no problems and the oil change itself didn't affect the noise either.

I've seen that others with similar problems have complained of bad EGR valves, or that the noise is "pleasant" and means the engine is running optimally. My EGR valve was replaced last month for the car's annual inspection. Also, I find it hard to believe that any noise coming from a 146000 mi. engine is a good sign.

Any ideas for what this could be? Is it a harmless issue or is it something more internal in the engine like a loose cam shaft? Any help would be great. Thanks!

I have a 97 cavalier and i had a noise problem also but it sounded like i was at 4,000 rpm's and i lokk down and i am at like 1,500. Come to find out it was the wheel bearing.

I think this is on the right track. If the noise is related to engine speed ONLY then I would look at the tensioner bearings, Alt bearings, etc.. This is much more likely than whatever you mean by "a loose cam" Good Luck.
