Transmission clunk
Sometimes my transmission starts shifting with a loud klunk, and will do so for the rest of the trip. On the next trip it willbe fine. It's only sometimes, any ideas on this ?

Is it when you put it into gear or when it shifts from 1st to 2nd??

1st to 2d, 2d to 3rd not from neatral to drive.

This seems to be a so called normal thing with these trucks. Here is a post I made a few days ago, I just can't figure out what percent of people have this type of problem or these symptoms. It would be nice to have a poll started to get a general idea how many people have this problem or how many don't have it.

I took my 2005 LT to the dealer because of the clunk going from 2nd to 3rd. Chevy said it was normal

To follow up this thread, I also had my 99 silverado to a transmission shop for the 2-3 clunk, they couldn't find anythig wrong.

Well, today i'm finaly going to install my Transgo Shiftkit. The box says: "This is not a do it yourself kit for professionals only " ??? Bullcrap ! I'll let you guys know later how it went.

I've had several Silverados and they all clunked, some worse than others. I just bought an '06 and it's still standard equipment grrrr...

Curious if a shift kit fixes this problem or if the clunk is there on an aftermarket rebuilt tranny. My 96 never clunked.

A lot of times when techs rebuilt a transmission, they'll forget to re-install the anti-clunk springs. There are 2 different anti-clunks, one for N to D, and the other 1st to 2nd, IIRC. I think a shift kit would only make the clunk worse, due to increased pressures and faster lock-ups..

Too bad you couldn't just put the old THM 400's back in. Now those were next to indestructible and worked great.

I personally dont think that it could be normal. I've had a '92, a '98 and now an '05 Silverado. They have all been Z71's and I have never had any kind of noises from their tranny's and all three had stock tranny's. 92 had 210,000 miles, 98 had 105,000 miles, and the 05 currently has 7500 miles.

I've been reading all the comments on the transmission "clunk" so started paying attention to mine. No clunk! Slow through the sub division, no clunk. Normal acceleration, no clunk. 2005 Silverado 1500 Z71 extended cab, just shy of 13000 miles. Maybe it'll stay that way.

Well, I installed the Transgo Shiftkit and can tell you that taking it for a spin the same day I notice the difference right away. Much smoother up and down shift at any speed. It's not too bad to install at all. Just messy with the fluid when you take the oil pan off. I can recommend this shift kit for anyone who has the famous clunk !
Bert BTW, my truck has 113,000 miles on it. It gave me the P1780 code and the dealer or any Tranny shop will tell you to rebuild the tranny. This is Bullcrap, they just want to rip you off, all you need is this shift kit. |

You are right about the p1870, this is almost always caused by the TCC valve body bore wearing and causing a pressure loss innlock up, how the shift kit address this condition?
