starting issue

here is the problem im having now. just bought the 97 cutty
didnt start when i got it
now i can get it to start but only if i hold the throttle body wide open from under the hood. it dosent rev real high (probably a rev limiter)
and it i let the lever go the car dies. if i let the lever down slowit will try to shut off. some times it will shut off with the body open

i think it could be dumping to much fuel, if so what could it be??
if not that what could it be??

Re: starting issue

What engine do you have? I would start with a good tune up first, since you mentioned that you just bought the car, not running, or at least check the components you would normally replace during a full tune-up.

? is are you getting fuel at the fuel rail.I had a problem just like this with my 96 cutty 3.1 3100 and it was the fuel pump.I payed 50 bucks for mine so thats the price rage dont think yours will be much higher then that.

the 2 things I have ran into on the 3.1 is if you can start it by holding the pedel all the way to the floor and it starts and as soon as you let of the pedel it dies then I would replace the fuel pressure regulator, it's located between the fuel rails, I've gotten them from the junk yard for about $20.00 or new about $120.00. the other thing you mentioned about having to hold the throttle body open under the hood, check to make sure that the throttle cable is in the right place in the mount bracket, if it has been taken appart it might not have been put back in the holder correctly and that might make it so that the pedel will not move as much as it should
