Re: Rs Vs. Vl

The VL is the base, stripped model, the RS is an upgrade with red pinstriped black bumpers, body side moldings, remote trunk release.....etc.The RS came with more standard equipment, the VL had to deal with 2 or 3 package groups to gain certain power/convenience options.Basically a VL is like a Cavalier Cadet (strippo)of 1982,the RS like the CL of 82.The Z24 was considered a completely different model, not necessarily a Cavalier.
When Cavalier debuted for 1982,it was called the "Complete car",with a list of around 40 items that were standard equipment. When customers rebelled about the "high" prices, the Cadet was issued mid year as a base, strippo, cheapo model. It failed miserably and didnt come back for 1983,but models were shuffled instead. The CL trim was never heard from again either. The VL (Value Leader)came around for 2nd generation 1988 as a new name for the base model. It was a parallel program with Chevy S10 and its "EL" (Economy Leader) model.
