Changed crankshaft position sensor

I had the 1992 that would't start when warm. I changed the crankshaft position sensor and now the vehicle runs very rough when idling. I assume that the gap may not be correct.
On that vehicle it is impossible to check the gap or make any adjustments to the sensor while the balancer is installed as there is a plastic shrowd that covers the sensor and it has to be installed prior to installing the balancer. I partially installed the balancer and checked the gap in a few places while rotating the shaft. I used the starter to rotate the shaft. I then removed the balancer, installed the plastic cover and re-installed the balancer.
Does anyone have an idea how to check the gap without taking the whole thing apart again.
When I was removing the balancer I did not have a pulley puller avaiable. I used an alluminum bar on the back of the balancer and hammered it off. Could I have possibly knocked the balancer out of round by a minute fraction and thus the interrupter ring would also be out of round thus screwing up the gap?
Again I can't check because there is no access.

I don't think you could damage the balancer with an aluminum bar, however I guess anything is possible.

I usually remove the balancer and use emery cloth to clean the crank and inside the bore on the balancer until it has a slip fit. I then apply a light coating of anti-seize to both parts so the balancer slides on & off by hand. I then slide the balancer on to set the gap with the bolt in the center of the balancer tightened with my impact turned down to about half torque. After you get the correct gap, remove the balancer again and install the plastic shroud and reinstall and torque balancer bolt. The gap will not change more than a few thousands when you apply full torque to the bolt.
