ES to RT Conversion

I'm getting an ES, something of a "gift" to keep the car in the family, but as much as I love the stealth, I can't help but feel it's a bit, well, slow. Granted, it's not the slowest thing on the road, but a vehicle that looks as good as the stealth should have a little more power in it. So, that being said, about how difficult would an ES/RT conversion be? I've done an engine swap in my Honda CRX, so I know the basics to the work. Would putting an RT engine/tranny into the ES be the same principle? Pull the ES engine/tranny, put in the RT. I don't want to heavily mod the vehicle, maybe a few bolt-ons to help it breathe easier, but a solid 222hp engine would be a nice upgrade for the heavy car. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: ES to RT Conversion

Um, if you have the ES...you already have the 222hp engine. Check the FAQ for specs. All ESs and RTs were the same mechanically. The only differences were comfort/luxury items. The RT had more options, like leather, digital climate control, etc. The next step up for you would be a twin turbo swap.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Why not drop the new eclipse engine in there? it would cost as much as the DOHC 6G72!
youd have a 3.8 V6 w/ 265 HP.

Only Canadian ES's got SOHC's. Only American Stealth with SOHC is the base Stealth.

As for your car feeling slow is it an automatic? If so then thats why. The auto's first gear is insanely tall and the auto sucks up a good bit of power. You could do a 5 speed swap.

Re: ES to RT Conversion

Does the auto tranny really take that much power away? I've been wondering about that since I am running an auto in my 91 SL.

Yes it does. The best stock auto DOHC time I have seen is 16.2. And thats a rarity. Most run 16.6-16.9 stock. The best stock manual DOHC time I have seen is 14.9. Again thats the best and average is around 15.2-15.5. So basicaly the auto adds 1 second to the 1/4 mile.

Re: ES to RT Conversion

HHHmmmm thats something to think about. I have been wanting to do the tranny swap but i couldn't justify spending the money for it. I guess now i have my reason. with that being said is there any place on the net in particluar that you would suggest looking for a good tranny?
