burnin oil
Im not aware of any leaks but every couple of months my tbird ends up about a quart and a half low on oil... Why is it burnin? and can it be fixed?

Hey Don...It's Normal for our cars to burn oil.. You didn't specify if you have a V6 or V8 though..?
I have a 95 V8 bird and it has over 130K on the clock.. Every 2 months i gotta add a quart or more.. If you research it further (go to www.tccoa.com and go into the forums, and search) you'll find out it's the valve stem seals i believe..or even the piston rings.. Symptoms include blowing blue smoke from the exhaust..and smelling burnt oil if you rev the engine when it has been sitting for like 10 minutes idling. Just check your oil once a week.. BTW, start using 10w40 cause it will remain thicker..

V6 3.8l Engine, it doesnt smell much like burnt - maybe a hint of smell at some points. No smoke at all though. Does this mean my engine isn't in good shape?

The 3.8 v6 i'm not too familiar on...do a search on www.tccoa.com
For a car that old, it's gonna burn oil, plain and simple. As far as getting someone to stop it...thats probably big bucks.. I'd suggest at your next oil change, use 10w30 or 10w40...but use a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer...this makes the oil turn into a stickey, stickey oil that holds on to the engine parts better then plain old oil..

I switched to synthetic 5months ago... Is that to thin? or do they have a 10w40 synthetic oil?
Im glad its not a big problem , I wont bother worrying about it now thanks...

For an older birds like yours and mine i wouldn't trust that synthetic blend or full synthetic. If i were you i would follow solaris=amazing 's advice and go with 4 quarts of 10w40 HIGH MILEAGE oil and 1 quart of Lucas Stabilazer. I use Castro High Mileage, but you can use whatever brand you would like. ****Donald91tbird , I'm assuming you have a 1991 Thunderbird with at least 100,000 miles on it, thats why I suggest going with the high mileage oil***...

You may find that synthetic blends or full synthetic oils may work better for your bird. my bird has just over 154,000 miles and I like to go with the high mileage because it has conditioners and detergents that cars with higher mileage could benifit from. Should help stop or at least control any oil leaks you may have. Especially when combined with Lucas Oil Stabilzer. Try the synthetic, then try the high mileage and see what works better. For me, it's castro high mileage.
