!999 Silverado Starting Issue
My 1999 Silverado has had its' fair share of problems but I need a little help on this one.
79,000 miles and about three or four weeks ago I notice it had a little difficulty in starting. It never had a tune-up so I went ahead at that point and replaced the plugs, plug wires, air filter, pcv valve. The truck seemed to actually run better but i was dissapointed to seee that the starting problem was still there and is currently getting worse. It barely started on me today and almost left myself and two young kids stranded quite a distance from my home. It runs great when travelling down the road. No skips, hitches or otherwise. I recently got into a big riff with an older Buick with a similar problem and I am not anxious to re-live the nightmare of troubleshooting sensors and such. I haven't had the codes read (Does anyone know if Advance Auto does this as a service?) and I know it can be helpful but right now I am looking for someone who had a similar problem and who could share with me what the fix was. BTW, the fuel filter has never been changed out and actually i was going to start there. Thanks, Paul |

I should mention that when the motor does not start it does turn over but has difficulty "catching."

Re: !999 Silverado Starting Issue
Assuming his '99 is NBS, he won't have a distributor to put a cap/rotor on. Fuel filter couldn't hurt, first thing that occurs to me is the battery. AC Delco batteries are typically rated for six years, of course, since you've done all you listed, I'd assume you thought of that too =).

Re: !999 Silverado Starting Issue
Ape you are right about the NBS. No rotor or cap here. Changed out the battery about ten months ago but you know, sometimes it's the simplest things. I'll check out the alternator/batt in the AM.
Thanks MEC and APEOR. Paul |

if it just spins and spins the motor but doesnt start thats the same problem i had
try this just blip the starter to on for like 1/2 second to cycle the motor a bit and then try to turn it on if i did that mine would start right up i think there is a check ball or something in the fuel pump that fails cause mine would run fine after it started but had trouble buildingenough fuel pressure to start immediately anyway it ended up being a fuel pump mine had 106k |

Re: !999 Silverado Starting Issue
i dont know.....i got atleast 130000 miles out of my pump before i replaced it and that was only because of the sending unit.....it still pumped fine...i would probly check the regulator, repair if needed...then check fuel pressure at the rail...if its still low...do the pump..thats an expensive pump just to replace for shits and giggles....

Replace the fuel pressure regulator and forget the pump, unless you know that IS the problem.
FPR is easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. If that doesn't fix your problem, then go further, i'm betting on the FPR. Why buy more trouble, fuel pump is more expensive and a PIA to replace. Do this, pull the vacuum line off the FPR, if you get raw fuel, then it's bad for sure. Easy fix.
