Cool I'm REALLY worried!!

I have a '99 olds Intrigue with a 3.5 engine, 78K miles, and the thing runs and handles like it is new. Everything on it works!

However, I did seem to hear a very faint windy sound when I was cruising down the highway doing about 90 mph. Don't have a clue what it is.

Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

if the sound came from the inside its probably the vents otherwise its most likely the body not liking the speed you are cruising at.

Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

I agree with coopdavillage. Maybe you had the a/c on fresh air instead of recycled air (cabin only). One more thing you can do is check the weather striping. The cheapest way is take a piece of copy paper fold it in half.
Put the paper in between the door and door jam.
Run the paper the length of the door, if you feel resistance all the way through than your striping is okay. Do the same for the rest of the doors.
If there is little or no resistance then you have a gap where you might be hearing that (windy sound). Now that is one of many ways that you hear that windy sound. I won't say that will slove your problem, but it might be just that the weather striping.

Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

also another option to check is the joints of your doors (extreme but happening to me ) and make sure that you dont have any loose bolts that hold on body parts.

Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

one more thing is the door panel itself. Check to see if anything fell off over the years. GM stuck some cheap ass deading material with adhesive spray. Over the years it will dry up and you will have to retouch the adhesive. And check the window gasket too.

Re: Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

I'm out in Oklahoma. I don't do it for long....just here and there. Probably the wind noise is just my imagination because I don't hear it @80 mph. Would like to quiet the tire noise but the car is to old down to do anything about it. Should have done some sound dampening when I first bought the car, like undercoating the wheel wells.

Re: I'm REALLY worried!!

Finally figured out the problem. With age, there is a gap between the plastic front bumper and its styrofoam insert. Jammed some small pieces of ensolite MLC foam between the two and now the bumper doesn't move at all. Also notice that the front foglights were getting loose so I tighted their plastic bolts. Car is now as quiet as it was new.

Plan on doing the trunk area with B-Quiet Ultimate and 1/4" ensolite foam next week-end. Will let everyone know the results.

OK, I did the trunk area yesterday. Once I got the trim unloosen (easy) and spare tire out, things went very well. The car did have about 3 sq. ft.(total) of OEM sound damping material on the rear quarter panels and wheel wheels. Not a whole lot. The used a jute type material which is good but not the best. Added about 10 or 11 sq. ft of b-quiet ultimate and glued about 6 or 7 sq ft. of ensolite MLC 1/4" foam. Took the Intrigue for a ride and the stereo speakers in the rear sounded much better but still had some noise starting at about 50 mph. Today, took a second look and figured out that the rear shelf was very loose ( apparently Intrigues with spoilers have a plastic cover where the standard top rear brake light assembly was located and that was poorly designed). Anyway, after tossing the pos plastic cover in the trash, got a piece of 1.5" x 1" wood and glue it between the rear shelf clip and its catch. Now the rear shelf is solid!

Took it for a spin and is very quiet now. Also put some damper stuff on the underside of the hood which was very easy to do.
