My 96 Toyo Avalon check engine light came on. I borrowed a tool to read the computer code and it detected code P0135 - Sensor Heater - Bank 1 Sensor 1 - 02 Sensor Heater Circuit malfunction? The autopart clerk tells me I need to go to the dealer, because he does not sell the part in question. Can someone please tell me what I need to do to correct this problem. Thanks +++

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Check Engine Light
It is probably the O2 sensor on that bank.

That's because they didn't know anything.
o2 sensor's normally only last 90-100,000 miles, so it is more than likely time for your to replace yours anyway. Start by resetting the ECU (Pull the EFI fuse for a second & replace it). If the code returns (It should) replace the rear(bank1) oxygen sensor. You'll get hit with a nice price, being a more complicated 4 wire type. Gonna take a hit. You've got 4 wire o2 sensors. Normally go for $60-90usd.

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Check Engine Light
just make sure u get the right part. air/ fuel sensor means before cat, o2 sensor means after the cat. Bank 1 is the head closest to the firewall. And sensor 1 means the first sensor after the cat. use some kind of rust gone or what ever u can cause being heated and cooled so many times makes the threads fragile, if it siezes then u must replace the hole pipe. clear the code by removing the efi fuse if you dont have a scan tool.

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Check Engine Light
Use your VIN to get the part number from the Toyota parts department, even if you don't buy it there. Then you will get the correct sensor.
Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the sensor next to the head and in front of the cat converter for the head nearest the firewall. Not after the cat. See the diagram on page one of: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h37.pdf

I noticed that you read the diagnostics for your car. I have a '98 Toyota Avalon with a 'check engine' light on. I assi=ume it is the O2 sensor, but I'd like to read it from the diagnostics connection. It is not the standard OBD2, but rather a round connector. Where do I get the connector? Does the connector work with a OBD2 reader?
Thanks! Mike |

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Check Engine Light
See if this helps:
http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h27.pdf http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/ The connector sounds like an OBDI connector. Check the end of the autoshop article. Your car should be OBDII compliant. Check under the dash - driver side by the center console for an OBDII connector.

Re: 96 Toyota Avalon Check Engine Light
What brand scanned did you use?
I have a '98 avalon and would like to buy a scanner but would like to get the correct scanner the first time around? Is the plug in the '98 a OBDI or and OBDII? |

Re: Reading the check engine light
Hi Mike,
What did you find out about the '98 Avalon scanner? I'm looking to buy a scanner for my '98 Avalon but don't know which one to buy. Any suggestions? |
