1997 trans/timing problem?

Recently had my tranny rebuilt in 97 4.0. 2 days ago I was almost home and it just would not go any further. The motor would rev, and if u tried to change gears it would feel like it would engage but just cold not make enough power to move the car. It was making an awful noise too, fearing doing more damage than already I shut off the motor. I then tried to restart and it acted as if the timing chain had broke. I had it towed to the repair facility that had recently rebuilt the trans thinking that possibly the flywheel had somehow sheared itself from the engine. The trans shop guy started trying to say it was a timing chain that is the problem. Although this is not possible as the car was running when the problem occured. Has anybody got any thoughts on this condition? Could a sheared flywheel cause this type of "masking" condition?

It might be possible, but it seems more than likely that the mechanic is trying to cover up a mistake he made. Besides, now he has something else he can charge you for. BTW, did this mechanic do the rebuild, or did you get a rebuilt or remanufactured tranny from another company (i.e. Jasper)?

PS... I'm guessing there is some sort of warranty on the "new" tranny? I don't think the warrantly covers mistakes made by the mechanic while rebuilding the tranny. As a result, the mechanic would have to do the work, but would not get reimbursed by the warranty company. Like I said, looks like he's out for more money. I'd also try to get the car to a different mechanic. It might not be possible, I know. But, if you could, you might end up saving a lot of money.

This mechanic did the rebuild. That was my suspicion as well, I think he is trying to cover up his shoddy work too.

No problem. I had the exact thing happen to me on more than one occasion.
