Re: Do 86-88 GT's come with 4 cyl engines?
Good question. Every single GT I ever came across had a V6, so I think the V6 was standard.
Now it might be possible a 4 cyl was a 'delete option', so one could order a GT with a 4 cyl, to save a few dollars. But this is just speculation, maybe someone else could clarify this situation. |

yep,
just dug out old GM archive books. both the rat and 84 are right; SE, GT, and Formulas were ALL 2.8L only the coupe had the Iron Duke, 2.5L there was a 'delete option' but it actually costed $78. more, and in 85/86 Chevy borrowed two of the Poncho 2.8L engines, had the R&D people super tune them (200hp ea!) and made a "Push Me, Pull Me" X/11 Citation AWD 400HP, as they installed one of the engines on a Fiero cradle under the rear hatch controlling the rear wheels, and was controlled from the diver's position via a toggle, as you could run as a FWD vehicle for gas economy, or toggle the rear engine to life, and WHOOP just about anything in the lane next to you. plus, since it was a mule, GM didn't have to abide by EPA, so they ran the four exhausts into dual out, but hi-flow 3" mufflers in place of cats! (why didn't this make production?) |

Because the one I have, is confusing the hell out of me.
I looked at the Vin Number, it says its a 85 4 cyl 5 speed. Yet it is the 86 GT. I have pics to show anyone. (upon request) It looks like a late model GT, with the 2.5 litre 4 in it. I think I got scammed when I bought this car. ;/ |

But - I've had lots of Fieros and for all the bad press the four's get - the two I had were the most fun because they were low maintenance and gutless enough to keep me out of trouble. The six's are too easy to push to excess for their handling capabilities and weak bottom ends. For around town you've got a good car with a bullet proof (allbeit underpowered) motor and cool styling. Have fun with it. |

The 2.8 was NOT standard equipment on the SE, just the GT and the Formula. |

If you remember the '84 Indy had the "Stock car nose, the skirts and the rear bumper that became the GT in '85 and the SE in '86, but it was a four cyl. There used to be an interesting story on the development at www.fiero.nl - probably the best Fiero site on the net. GM spent a fortune on the plastic body panels using the Fiero as the mule. That technology went on to become the (dustbuster) Lumina Van and then the Saturn. Check out Fiero.nl |

FYI, a genuine Fiero GT will have the code "WU2" in the list of RPO codes found on the driver's side front inner fender. If BOTH "WU2" and "LR8" appear, the car is a genuine GT special ordered with a 2.5L L4, and may be the rarest Fiero ever built.

Wanted to buy: 86-88 Fiero GT, 5 speed, fixer-upper. Blown motor, no motor? No problem! Rusty unibodies need not apply. 74-79 Ramcharger or 100, slant or no motor - not interested in v8 - Overdrive 4 is a big plus, NO hopeless rust buckets!!! 3Rd gen F body floor pans/camaro door skin (L) Why is it I see so many "Proud to be an American" bumper stickers on the backs of cars made in Japan or Korea??????

Lol I wish the rarest, the Vin does not have either of those, and it says its an 85. So it cannot be stock, I see. Well thats cool. I am alot less confused about it now. Thanks guys.
Also , I still have those pics if anyone at all is still in disbelief. But would anyone else be suprised to buy a "GT", than realize when you open the hood have the 2.5 staring back at you?
